Thor Industries was founded in 1980 when Wade F. B. Thompson and Peter Busch Orthwein acquired Airstream, which had faced a downturn in business in the late 1970s. Thompson and Orthwein used the first two letters of each of their names to create the new company’s name: Thor.
Airstream returned to profitability after one year under Thor’s management.
The company expanded and grew through acquisition, notably General Coach, a manufacturer of motorhomes and travel trailers, in 1982 and Heartland Recreational Vehicles LLC in 2010.
