The company was founded in 1951 after a reorganization of Geophysical Service, a seismic exploration company.

TI manufactured the first transistor radio in 1954 and the first integrated circuit-based computer for the U.S. Air Force in 1958.

In 1967 Texas Instruments manufactured the world’s first hand-held calculator in 1967.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s the company focused mainly on consumer electronics such as watches, digital clocks, home computers, hand-held  calculators, and sensors.

The company acquired National Semiconductor in 2011, which expanded its portfolio to 45,000 analog products and customer design tools.

Today TI is the world’s third-largest manufacturer of semiconductors after Intel and Samsung, and the second-largest supplier for chips of cell phones after Qualcomm.

Texas Instruments trades publicly on the NASDAQ under the symbol TXN, is a member of the S&P 500, is #223 in the Fortune 500, has 32,209 employees, and had $12.30 billion in revenue in 2013.
