Strand Bookstore, founded in 1927, was founded by Benjamin Bass who had 48 books to sell. Today, Strand Bookstore is New York’s largest bookstore, covering 18 square miles.
The company sells new, used, and antique books of all kinds. There are two locations; the main store on Broadway in Manhattan, and a kiosk in Central Park that opens when weather permits. As of June of 2017, the oldest and most expensive book in the store is a signed copy of James Joyce “Ulysses”, priced at $38,000. Fred Bass estimates that the company has more than 2.5 million books at any given time. In addition to books, the company sells its logo on T-shirts, stickers, and other merchandise. The store is still family owned and operated.
