The Southern California Gas Company was founded in 1867. Originally named The Los Angeles Gas Company, it was made up of 5 entrepreneurs who made natural gas from asphalt. Their first project was to install 43 gas lights that lined Main Street, making the city safer at night.
Today, the company provides natural gas to most of Southern California. With approximately 21.4 million customers, the company extends as far north as Visalia and as far south as the Mexican border.
Southern California Gas Company has more than 8,300 employees and is a subsidiary of Sempra Energy. The company is traded on the OTC markets under the symbol: SOCGP.
