Shopify was founded in 2006 when founders Tobias Lutke and Scott Lake tried to open a snowboarding company to sell products online.
Unhappy with the eCommerce platforms available at the time, Lutke, a computer programmer, decided to make his own. Shopify uses a proprietary eCommerce platform for online stores and retail point of sale systems. The Shopify platform offers online retailers a suite of services including payments, marketing, shipping, and customer engagement tools.
The company stated in May of 2021 that it had more than 1,700,000 businesses in approximately 175 countries using its platform.
In April 2010, the company launched its own app, allowing Shopify store owners to view and manage their stores from mobile devices.
In August 2019, Shopify launched Shopify Chat, a new native chat function that allows merchants to have real-time conversations with customers visiting Shopify stores online.
In December 2021, a group of publishers including Pearson Education, Inc., Macmillan Learning, Cengage Learning, Inc., Elsevier Inc., and McGraw Hill sued Shopify claiming that it had failed to remove listings and stores selling pirated copies of their books and learning materials.
While Shopify is based in Canada, there is also an American corporate office located in San Francisco, California.
In January 2022, the competition to woo store owners really heated up between Shopify and Amazon.
