Shaw’s Supermarket was founded in 1860 by George Shaw, who originally began as a teahouse in Portland, Maine. Shaw’s is one of the oldest markets in New England. The company has been sold several times over the years and today operates as a subsidiary of Albertson’s.
The company has more than 194 stores in 6 states after closing 169 stores in 2011. Most of the stores have undergone extensive remodeling. In 1999, the company acquired Star Markets. Shaw’s is one of the best-known supermarket names in New England and employs approximately 265,000 persons.
In mid-2013, both Shaw’s and Star Markets announced that they were removing their loyalty card programs.
In October 2022, Kroger announced that it would buy Albertsons, which owns Shaw’s Supermarkets. The deal should be completed in 2024.
Company headquarters remain in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts. The company has plans to relabel Shaw’s food brand label to Essential Everyday in all its stores.
