Quaker Steak and Lube was founded in 1974 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, by George Warren and Gary Meszaros. The original restaurant location was in an abandoned gas station. To save some cash, the pair used old license plates, old cars, and other mechanical tools as a decoration. The name is also a play on the abandoned gas station. Quaker Steak and Lube still uses old muscle cars as decorations and as a theme for their restaurants.
Today, the company has more than 50 locations in 14 states, and one in Ontario, Canada. Originally a “cook it yourself” steak house, the company is now known more for chicken wings and the wide assortment of sauces to season them.
In late 2015, the company was purchased by TravelCenters of America, who plan to open more locations at their truck stops.
