Lou Malnati’s Pizza was founded in 1971 in Lincolnwood, Illinois. Malnati grew up learning about the pizza business at his father’s Pizzaria Uno restaurant. Lou Malnati’s father created the original Chicago style deep dish pizza, often referred to as a pizza pie.
Today, Lou Malnati’s Pizza has 56 locations, all within the greater Chicago area with the exception of one location in Phoenix, Arizona.
Although Lou Malnati passed away, his sons have taken over the business. Pizza ingredients are placed in the opposite order of most thin crust pizzas, with cheese on the bottom and sauce on top.
Lou Malnati’s Pizza is one of the best known pizza restaurants in the state of Illinois. In addition to the restaurants, the company owns a division called Lou Malnati Presents Tastes of Chicago, which in collaboration with Portillo Restaurants, ships frozen pizza nationwide.
In September 2020, the Daily Meal listed Lou Malnati’s Pizza on their list of Top 100 Best Pizza Restaurants.
