The Jones Group was founded in 1970 by Sydney Kimmel when he became president of the Jones Apparel Division in the W.R. Grace & Company.
He bought the fashion division in 1975 and incorporated it as Jones Apparel Group.
The new company grew quickly and in 2004 bought the luxury department store Barneys New York for $400 million, which it sold in 2007 for $943.2 million to Dubai-based investment firm Istithmar.
In December of 2013 private equity firm Sycamore Partners bought The Jones Group and split it up into four companies: Nine West Holdings, Easy Spirit, Ann Klein, and NW Jewelry Group.
