CMS Energy was founded in 1888 by William Augustine Foote and Samuel Jarvis as Jackson Electric Light Works in Jackson, Michigan.
The company was successful, and in 1910 Foote teamed up with new investors to create Consumers Power Co.
In 1931 the company installed a 40-mile pipeline to natural gas wells, replacing manufactured gas made from heating coal.
In 1962 Consumers Power built Big Rock Point, Michigan’s first nuclear power facility and the fifth in the United States.
