Coit was founded in San Francisco, California, in 1950 by Louis Kearn. Originally starting off strictly as a dry cleaning business, Kearn found a niche by offering to dry clean drapes. The name comes from the Coit towers, near to where Kearn’s original building was located. The company grew quickly and franchising began in 1962.
In 1952, Coit was advertising a guarantee of the company’s work, which was highly unusual at the time. Before long, the company not only held a patent for their specialized way of dry cleaning draperies, and in 1970, the company was offering cleaning of upholstery and carpets as well.
Today, Coit is best known for its drape, carpet and upholstery cleaning, although the company has expanded to other areas as well, including clean up from water damage, cleaning of air ducts, tile and grout, wood floors and stone cleaning. The company serves more than a half million customers each year and has franchises in the US, Canada, and Thailand.
Coit is still family owned and operated, with Bob Kearn leading the company as CEO. Company headquarters are now located in Burlingame, California.
