Chuck Anderson and his wife were operating a dog training business out of a boarding kennel in Minnesota in the early 1970’s. The couple met Don Tauer, who bred German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. Anderson and Tauer wanted to create their own business and in May of 1990, the first Chuck and Don’s Pet Food location was opened in Eagan, Minnesota.
Today, the company has 34 stores in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The company focuses on being a “home town” pet supply store that customers can rely on for everything from pet accessories to training, food to housing. Don Tauer retired in 2000 but still lends his name to the company. In 2014, Chuck and Don’s Pet Food launched an employee stock ownership program.
Chuck and Don’s Pet Food will open two new stores in 2016. The company had annual revenue in 2014 of $52.7 million and is listed as #4,366 on the Inc. 5000 list of Fastest Growing Companies in America.
In February 2019, the company was acquired by Independent Pet Partners for an undisclosed sum.
In January 2021, Chuck and Don’s announced that they were offering same-day delivery service.
In February 2023, the company announced that it was filing for bankruptcy and would close several locations.
