Sport Chalet was founded in 1959 by husband and wife Norbert and Irene Olberz. They purchased a ski and tennis store in La Canada, California, where the company headquarters remains today.
The store was popular because it carried merchandise other stores did not have, like surfboards, scuba and mountain climbing equipment.
In 1981, a second location was opened in Huntington Beach.
By 1987, there were 6 stores. The chain continued to grow in the late 80s and early 90s.
In 1992, the company went public.
In 2011, founder Norbert Olberz died.
Today, there are 54 Sport Chalet stores in California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. Besides selling sporting goods, many locations have dive pools and offer scuba certification classes.

Sport chalet is one of my favorite stores ever. I play many sports and it was like being in a candy shop whenever I went to a Sport Chalet. If it hadn’t been for Sport Chalet’s dive shop I KNOW I never would have gotten certified as a diver. Now I know the beauty of the underwater sea. Thank you Sport Chalet. I’ve purchased scuba, golf, snowboarding, running, cycling, and bodyboarding equipment from your stores. I am truly sad to see THIS company go out of business.

I am writing of my awful experience in your store today. A friend lost a pair of my sandals and so bought me a pair of Reef sandals at your store and gave me the gift receipt. I finally drove all the way to the store today with Gift Receipt in hand (because they did not fit and were not comfortable). So proof that the item was paid for. Was told by the employee and store manager that your “policy” requires the original receipt even though my friend had gone to the trouble to get a gift receipt. What for? Since you have no intention of honoring it anyway. He lives four hours away so now I have to wait for him to mail me the original receipt and drive all the way back to the store to get a refund. Guess what? Not only will I never shop here ever again but I put a bad review on yelp and shared it on Facebook and am telling everyone I know not to shop there. It is a miracle you are still in business. My friend’s husband is a coach in Palos Verdes so they will not shop there either. Merely a matter of time before you run out of customers to abuse.

I have never been so embarrassed and humiliated in my life. For one, this is not my usual line of work but due to recent oilfield layoffs and having a family to support I have no choice but to seek whatever work I can get regardless of what line of work it is. For any person to be treated as I was is 100% unnecessary and unprofessional. I may not have any experience in customer service, but I’ll tell you this IT DOES NOT TAKE A MORON TO KNOW THAT YOU SHOULD AT LEAST TREAT PEOPLE WITH SOME RESPECT. Our society today has seemed to have lost COMMON COURTESY AND RESPECT FOR OTHER HUMAN BEINGS. I expect it from people on the streets, but from a Manager who is the picture of your company, who is a representation of Sport Chalet, an attitude like this is not good for your business and it will leave a very bad impression on the few customers this store still has left. As a father to two sons who both play football for Bakersfield High School and Basketball for Bakersfield College I can honestly say that every piece of sports equipment they own my wife and I have purchased from your store. After being disrespected and treated the way I was at your store by the person you call a manager, I will never shop at Sports Chalet again and I will make sure to inform my son’s coaches, teammates and their parents about my recent and very last experience I had at your store. Dicks Sporting goods and Sports Authority has now gained a few new customers thanks to Mr. Brown.

I have good things and horrible things to say about my experience so far with Sport Chalets online service. I ordered bindings and a jacket for this upcoming season(Saturday). Order was cancelled because apparently after the order was placed they no longer had the items i ordered in stock. Fine. I call they give me discounts on similar products by getting it approved by corporate(Sunday). Cool. At that time they told me now all i need to call a different department in order to make the purchase for the discounted items. No problem. I had called this different department at leave 5 times Monday, another 5 times Tuesday, and ANOTHER 5 times Wednesday. When you call this number it asks you to hold and that the next available rep will help you. You sit on the phone for 15 minutes then tells you no one is available and to leave a message and someone will give you a call back as soon as possible, witch i did. ALL I WANT TO DO IS GIVE YOU MY MONEY IN EXCHANGE FOR GOODS!!! After giving up on that i call back the people i was originally given the discount by and they tell me they arent able to get me directly to them and that the only thing they can do is to have me order the items for full price and after the fact refund me for the discounted. So everyone at the end of 888-801-9162 option 3 in the directory, kudos you did your job and helped me out allot. Everyone at the end of 888-801-9162 option 2 in the directory, you are all useless and i hope you all wake up from your 3 day long nap and call me back so i can explain to you how i feel about you wasting hours of my time and making me have to fork out twice as much money as i should be in hopes that me refund for the discounted amount actually goes threw.

My husband and I went to the Brea store on sunday11/09/2014 to buy 2 pair of boots for my husband. He keeps a pair at work and one at home. He found a pair they were $129.93 but the store could only find I in stock, so we asked the sales girl if she could transfer the other pair. The great thing was these were buy 1 get one. So after waiting for her to put in the transfer, she came out and said” Oh these are not on sale anymore they are $129.93 each is that ok” I said no that is not ok because your shelf tag still said they were on sale. (she took the tag off the shelf and left) We asked for a manger he said he would only honor one pair at the sale price. My husband bought his last two pair of boots from you and paid full price at $89.99 each. We are very disappointed in the managers attitude. I work in retail and when WE NEGLECT to take down sale prices we honor the sale price. Sports Chalet Brea has really let us down. Carrie and Robert

I am writing to let you know how much I appreciate the outstanding customer service that your bike staff provides. I visited your store in the hopes of getting my old electra townie fixed. I have been dealing with a dropping chain for years and have pretty much given up on riding my expensive bike. Well, before I decided to sell on Craig’s List and not mention this defect my son-in-law said he was purchasing a new Electra from Sports Chalet. He is pretty much a detail person and really did his homework and found Sports Chalet to be the best in customer service and price. In the process of buying his new bike he mentioned my dropping chain problem. Your staff was very attentive and helpful and mentioned they could possibly fix the problem. I was hopeful but not convinced. I brought the townie in and waaaaa-laaaa, they fixed my bike. I am so happy, it rides better than ever and I am not worried about having to put the chain back on the bike every few miles. The employees I interacted with, especially Udie(I always called him Rudy so not quite sure of his true name), were very knowledgeable about the Electra product line and seemed genuinely interested in helping me find items that met my needs rather than just being focused on making a quick sale on a new bike.
Because of their efforts, I am able to enjoy the road on my townie. The bike is perfect, son-in-law also turned me onto new handlebars so I now have one sweet ride! I will continue to visit your store in the future, as well as recommend it to others. Please let Udie and Hilton, as well as the other employees in the bike department, know that their efforts did not go unnoticed. You have put together a great team that makes customers feel respected and valued. And they know how to fix bikes!!!

Hello there,
Thank you for the label. I am a loyal customer, I make frequent purchases both in Sport Chalet stores and Sport Chalet online. I have had many recent issues with various online orders; one was delayed, one was not delivered, one was cancelled due to stock (even though the website showed and allowed the items to be ordered) and now I received the wrong item. And the item I originally ordered is not only out of stock but the sale price is no longer valid. I do not think it’s very professional nor courteous to customers that spend much time choosing their items and ordering and paying then being told the items are out of stock and the order cancelled without notice until after the cancellation and then wrong items being sent and the customers wasting valuable time both ordering and waiting for the shipment to arrive. I wasted time searching through your website and ordering only to receive the wrong item and miss the product due to it now being out of stock and also missing the opportunity of the sale price, even though it ordered the item with the sale price. I believe I have been treated very unprofessional with many of my orders. I have spent hours waiting on the phone, emailing, and speaking to customer representative inquiring about my orders and then being told of cancellation, delays, cancelled orders due to sports chalet fault, wrong items delivered and so on. On top of all the issues and lack of proper professional manner, my continuous various emails have been ignored. I have not received a single response to any of my emails nor have I received a promised phone call from customer representative. I am requesting proper compensation for my valuable time and all the issues with various orders. Thank you for your time.
A loyal Sport Chalet customer,
Candie Aquino

Hello, my family and I were at your location in Glendora off of Grand Avenue on Friday, October 18, 2013 @9:00pm. I was looking around at the items that were on the walls. As I was walking there was a large bike rack just place on the floor sticking out where I banged my leg on it. I got a deep gouge cut and started bleeding. I asked your associate if there was any band aids and his reply “No”. No apology what so ever and no customer service was given to me during this time while bleeding and in pain. I did speak with the manager I believe her name was Julie. She attended me by providing me with 1st aid kit. Had to be somewhere and didn’t have time to complete a report. I’m scaling it up to corporate for handling. I was informed that those bike racks are brought in around 8pm. Your store closes at 9;30pm. I can’t see that bike rack being brought in so early for someone else to get injured, or placing it out of customers path. I’m just alittle bothered how no customer service was provided to me and how it was handled. My cut is pretty deep and it was a metal railing that cut my leg.
