Southern Wine & Spirits was founded in 1968 in Florida by Jay W. Weiss, Harvey R. Chaplin, and Howard Preuss. The next year the company expanded to California, where it continues to have state-wide distribution.
The company expanded to Nevada in 1976, Arizona in 1992, South Carolina in 1993, Pennsylvania in 1995, Hawaii in 1996, Kentucky in 1998, New Mexico in 2000, Colorado in 2001, Illinois in 2002, New York in 2004, Maine, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, and Vermont in 2005, Alabama in 2006, Delaware, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska and Washington in 2008, and Indiana in 2010.
Today Southern Wine & Spirits is the largest distributor of wine and spirits in the United States. The company offers 5,000 brands and serves more than 200,000 customers in 35 states.
Southern Wine & Spirits is #30 on the Forbes list of America’s Largest Private Companies, has 22,000 employees, and had $16.5 billion in revenue in 2016.
Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits maintains a corporate office in Miami, Florida.
