Shoppers Food Warehouse was founded in 1929 when the Herman brothers opened their own supermarket, called Jumbo Food Store in Washington, D.C. The company continued to grow and add locations until they opened their first store in Virginia, which they named Shoppers Food Warehouse.
Today, the company has more than 55 locations and continues to grow and expand. Most locations average about 55,000 square feet and offer a variety of products and services, including produce, baked goods, meats and seafood, salad bars, cookware, and prepared foods, among other items. The regional chain boasts more than 30,000 everyday low prices with no loyalty card needed. Shoppers is one of the largest supermarket operators in the Washington, DC, metro area, right behind Giant Food Stores.
The company announced in August 2020 that competitor Lidl would acquire 6 of Shoppers locations in Virginia and Maryland.
As of 1999, the company operates a subsidiary of SuperValu, Inc. Company headquarters are located in Bowie, Maryland.

On March 23, 2020 I went to your store out on Ingleside and I found a parking space for a handicap, it looked like it was previously a walkway but here there was a cement bucket with a sign saying handicap parking. When your employee said that I couldn’t park there and I thanked him for his information but I didn’t think that he knew what they did. When into the store and was starting to check out when I heard over the INTERCOM the manager stating that a certain car make and model and tag number need to be removed from the handicap parking space. And once I knew this with me and I informed him that it was I handicap space he said it was a walkway and we went outside and I showed him. He said that that sign was for the cars on the right and the left side now mind you they had no handicap symbol in that space. I informed him that he should have removed the signs so there would be no confusion. That he could’ve taken this matter one or two ways, could’ve waited for my car to leave and remove the sign or place a shopping cart in that spot like they did on the other side of it and he wouldn’t have to blast this whole thing on intercom but he decided to take his anger out on a customer and it sounds like with the tone of his voice that he has had to do this several times. He knew who I was because the attendant outside informed him about the situation. He could’ve pulled me aside or as I suggested remove the sign but instead he wanted to be unprofessional and show the worst side of him. Now all you have done is lost the customer I don’t care if hell freezes over I will never go into another shoppers again in GIANT now has my business. This could have been done in the most pleasant way possible but as a lifelong customizing get that so you will no longer get my business. I will also be doing this by email so you can see the pictures that I took to show you just what I saw.

i had a bad experience in 2019. at the location in king shopping center. i had an employee approach me at the counter one day fussing at me about paying for a pack of marked down water. just because it was sitting on the cart she worked on.she claimed it was damage.she knew mark downs was sold in the store. one of the employee co worker scanned it and said it was a mark down not damaged.so i believe she was down there in my face just to be seen and make.a scene.what i don’t understand is why was she down there early in the morning not working on her post in the first place. i don’t believe she was working in the store that day.i believe her co worker working behind customer service that day told her something and started the whole thing.it had been a week since i played for the water.it appear to look like the employee was in the store waiting on me to come in the store. to stir up drama. it’s very disturbing to see an employee target out a customer .and carry herself in that way in a place of business. and her co workers just standing around watching this behavior. i spoke to someone behind customer service that day about the employee behavior in the store that morning.whoever she was she said nothing about the incident and stayed quiet during the whole conversation.so that tells me the person was condoning the behavior. i believe it was a straight out attack on me in that store that morning. because the attack was planned a week before hand.some of the employees that worked at the kung shoppers food at landover md was just rude and unprofessional and no manners .always with an attitude. the 2 females that was in on the attack know who you are and what you planned that day.harrassing an older woman.for the two of you i should have reported you to the corporate office to be removed out of your position. the 2 of you need to be a shame of yourself bring drama to the work place. to corporate you need to watch who you are hiringnto work in your place of business. because those 2 employees and their co workers that day was just as responsible for that disgusting attack that day. i will never shop at another shoppers food store again.those kind of employees give your business a bad name.a would bring your business down.

I lodged a complaint in May of 2020 after being taking a bite of chicken salad. I bit into a foreign object and slightly punctured my gum. Due to COVID-19 i rinsed my mouth frequently with warm salt water. I contacted Shoppers corporate office, and their insuranxe.company called. I submitted photos to the adjuster in August/September 2020 with no response. I called the adjuster last month and was informed Gina Davis is no.longer employed with us. I was transfered to the person who is handling the claim and left a.message. to date no one has contacted me. I have had the chicken salad in my freezer along with the foreign object. I am request a call from a competent customer service MANAGER from Shoppers corporate office.
I have read a lot of complaints about Shoppers and their RUDE employees at their stores. I myself have not had that experience, but dealing with this issue I am not sure why people would continue support such an establishment.

To.Mr.Robert Gleeson/ Corporate Office Manager;
I shopped at the Shoppers Food Warehouse at 5820 Silver Hill RD, Forestville, MD on Sunday, August 23, 2020, and tried to use my $10 off my purchase of $50 or more. Unfortunately for me, it did not work using the SHOPPERS app.
So, I tried today, Tuesday, August 25, 2020, didn’t realized the coupon has expired. I got up to the register and the cashier, Cynthia was really unprofessional with no customer service skills what so ever. The cashier replied, “no, no very nasty, this has expired. I said, “in the era of COVID 19 and people standing in lines at the food banks you won’t honor my coupon”, again no. I asked for the supervisor Johnny Pryor, he was as well if not more, rude and disrespectful.
This is my neighborhood store that I normally patronize. During the holidays when I shop here I pay $5 that the store ask for prepared grocery bags for the homeless. But, during a era of the Coronavirus, I couldn’t get a two day expired coupon honored.
I will not and won’t be using my dollars here anymore. There are several other grocers in the area that will be honored to get my coins. Thank you.

I have a question about the stackable $10 off $50 spent app.
Why have I been told two different things?
Can I use the app coupon more than once?
I was told “yes” months ago and I really appreciated it. I also clip the coupon for the news paper.
I spend on average of $200 a week and everything helps at this time of year.
I really need to know what you think stackable means because they sure don’t at the store I go to.
My husband and I have also clipped extra coupons for others that are shopping at the time we are. They really appreciate it because they don’t get the flyer.
I just want a real answer so I know what I can and can’t do.

Good afternoon. I had a bad experience with the Assistant Store Director Mr. Carey at the Shopper’s Food Warehouse at 4801 Marlboro Pike, Capitol Heights, Md. I think Carey is his first name. I had gone through the line around 10:00am(ish) on Friday, November 16th. I asked the cashier if I could get cashback of $60.00 and she stated that the cashback limit was only $20.00 until 11:00am. I did not like this so I went to the customer service desk which was manned by no one so the cashier summoned someone to hear my plea. I told Mr. Carey that I did not think that it was fair that I could not get the amount of money within reason that I wanted back and that I should not be penalized because I get up early. I did use a slight bit of profanity and he asked me not to do that so I refrained. Somewhere in the conversation it all went wrong and he told me to get my nappy head out of the store. I was wearing a hat so I do not know why he thought my hair was nappy so I told him that his momma’s hair was nappy. He proceeded to verbally abuse me. They think that everyone who comes in that store is ghetto I suppose, but I plan to show him through litigation that he has the right one. He scandalized my name and was a detriment to my character and for this Shopper’s Food Warehouse will pay. You will be hearing from me in the near future.

This is in the form of a complete, and this is not the first time I have complained about the person, at a previous visit, I had gotten Liverwrust and Provolone Cheese , and she kept telling me it was going to be a while like 4-5 time, repeatly, the Liverwrust first then the cheese, but today…today when my son and I went to store No. 2626 located at 4801 Marlboro Pike, Carol Hill Shopping Center, my son said hello to get the Deli person attention was flouring chicken at the time, she turn turned around in response and said yes what do you need, she said I am doing something right right now, she was given our order, and told us to go ahead and do our shopping and come back and so 15-20 minutes and my son went back and only the Turkey was ready, she said she would slice the provolone cheese and find us, I have never had such rude and professionalism such as that. There was NO concern on her part of customer service, or respect. I think that your staff and manger need to be retrained and I except a letter of apology from the store manager. I WILL not shop at any of your store again and this will be taken to two other levels of complaints, namely, The BBB and The Federal Trade Commission until I get satifactory, the woman is rude to the utmost have no concept of customer service…I expect a response and soon.

I just got home from trying to visit the Shoppers in Crofton, MD, key word “trying”. They close at 12am from what I understand. I showed up at 11:45pm expecting to buy some sodas that were on sale. I walked up to the front door and saw a man vacuuming and he told me they were closed. When I first pulled up to the store I saw two cars pull away and I’m assuming the same thing happened to them. There are so many other stores I could have gone to that are close by. I know Wegmans wouldn’t have turned me away 15 minutes before they closed I know giant wouldn’t have either it’s a shame that your business is doing that to its customers.

Too who it may concern, I am a frequent customer of your store in Germantown MD. I do stay 5 mins away. I went in on May 3 to purchase creamy Italian it was 4 on the shelf 2 dates was in February and the other 2 dates was April I pull all 4 off the shelf, took it to the front to give to the cashier to let her know it was out of date and she bagged and took the label off the head to make sure it didn’t end up back on the shelf, On May 5th I returned back to the store to see if creamy Italian was restocked and it was and I was excited because I was going to buy it. Low and behold it was the same 2 that was back on the shelf with April 4 2018 date. I was mad because I wanted the dressing, so I took it to the Manager and all he could say was sorry,. I told him this is the second time I pulled it off the shelf, and then to my knowledge the paper was unwrapped off the top so no one would put it back on the shelf. I think that’s a disgrace to customers especially when you want to buy dressing for your salad that night. Please be sure that your employees do their job. Especially when you think you’re doing a good job for your company by pulling your out of dates but the same expired products end up back on the shelves. Thank you Renee Bright.

Hello,
I will be writing the provided corporate address as well. Today was my first time visiting Shoppers since moving back to DC. I needed to go to Target and thought I’d try it out to see if it was comparable to Harris Teeter since Safeway on The Hill is closed for a rebuild. First upon entering with my toddler we waited for five plus minutes in the customer service line to see about signing up for a rewards program. The woman working the customer service counter said they do not have a rewards program so I can not sign up. Fair enough. So we went about our shopping while shopping a man who claimed to be homeless approached me and asked if I could help him out. I told him I don’t have cash on me and he asked if I was able to buy detergent for him. So I replied yes. Please leave it with customer service and I will purchase it on the way out. Then I went about my shopping. My spouses meeting ended early so he ended up meeting us at Shoppers so we could go to lunch at a local restaurant. The man appeared and asked me again about his detergent as I noticed he did not just pick a detergent on sale he chose the most expensive one they had which were Tide Pods. He had been asking every customer in the store for help in and out of the aisles for at least twenty minutes. So my husband said come with me I’ll buy it for you. So he did and realized this man clearly wanted the money and gave him the receipt because he felt regardless of what the man said or asked he was in need. When we were checking out this man was spotted again but this time buy the management team. He had already been in the store for at least a half hour at this point. The two men confronted him next to us in the self check out.
( Andrew from self checkout may need guidance) We were checking out when one manager walked away and the other one was stern with the gentleman asking him about the Tide and where it had gone? My husband and I only heard half of what he said but chimed in and said we purchased the Tide for this man. The manager rudely told us to stay out of it! As he kept talking to him. Finally my husband said you should probably leave before you get into trouble. The man said thank you and left. Now as getting ready to leave we again said to the manager we were sorry to interrupt however we wanted it clear we purchased the Tide. The manager was one of the rudest managers I have ever encountered! He told us the man is a con and it’s not his first time so what we waste our money on is our business but he will just come and back to drink……. So we said okay. He was rude to us and walked away. This was the worst and strangest shopping experiences at a grocery store I’ve ever encountered. Not because of the apparent con man on the loose but due to the MANAGEMENT TEAM! The head manager of the store completely brushed us off and made a phone call. I was in a store where it took over a half hour to flag down a man asking every shopper for money. Not one person greeted us or said thank you for shopping today. Which at Harris Teeter on Capitol Hill they always do! Then to be treated by management as though we were awful to buy someone Tide and we were part of the problem as paying customers was baffling. How about How was your experience? Did you find what you were looking for? Thank you for choosing us today? No. Okay. Here’s what I’ve learned you couldn’t pay me to go back and deal with this staff and I have a new found love for Harris Teeter and Whole Foods. Also while in line a bottle of soda shot across the store and nearly hit someone… Not Surprised.

To.Mr.Robert Gleeson/ Corporate Office Manager;
First, I would like to start with a compliment which is long overdue. I shop 3 times a week in the SFW in New Carrolton, Riverdale Rd location; for my household, my mother and an elderly neighbor.
Sometime ago, I forgot my $10 off coupon and was very disappointed. As I was complaining to one of the sales associate, whose name is Sharon, she asked if what type of phone I had. She took the time to show me how to download the SFW App,(which I never knew existed) so that could use the coupon. I was very excited and grateful!
At another time while shopping, Sharon, again asked if I knew about the Friday freebies, and saving the coupons on the app.
She is always pleasant, and willing to help all the customers. And she should be recognized for her great customer service.
I’ve written to SFW Corp. office in the past, concerning the poor level of service provided at this location.
It’s quite evident, as long as the store is in business, and customers are shopping it not important how the customers are served.
Which, now brings me to another concern. I was returning as item. There were 2 men at the customer service counter hanging out, loitering.
One of the men was wearing a SFW apron, I’m not sure if the other man worked there, but he was engaging all the customers in line at the counter.
As, I waited for the nonchalant sales associate behind the counter to finish my transaction, the man (whom, I’m not sure if he’s an employee) asks if my coat was warm. I replied, discreetly, as I saw his interaction with the previous customer.
The SFW employee now, very boldly and confident, says to the man, “You don’t know what to say out your mouth do you? What you really want to ask is, can I get in your coat with you?”
I looked at him, with a blank stare, which meant nothing to him, as he repeated it again, hoping I would answer.
I then said to him, “ I guess you haven’t heard of sexual harassment” he got a chuckle out of my statement, which now gets the attention of the nonchalant associate who thought I was talking to her.
I walked away, to find the store manager on duty Mr. Carey, who was just a few feet away from the service counter, and was unaware of what was going on.
I shared my thoughts, that this store for years has lacked customer service, but, this was the icing on the cake.
I told Mr. Carey, that I thought that the store needed sensitivity training and now sexual harassment training.
It was quite disgusting, and I’m applaud that this store associate who obviously, lacks professionalism and judgement, doesn’t understand that the workplace WILL NOT and CANNOT tolerate unwanted sexual innuendoes. Only if, this is a standard that is conveyed from management.
Mr. Carey, knew of the associate and said he would speak to his manager.
In conclusion, this store’s culture is very unfriendly.
No one wants to grow up to be a store sales associate, however, if they have another choice, they should do what makes them happy.
As the world is changing, and other companies are leading the way,(Korger,Walmart,McDonalds) by releasing employees, and investing in more of customer self check outs and kiosks. We will all realize how great we had it, just by saying, “Hi, how may I help you?” and “Thanks for shopping”
