Dickey’s Barbecue Pit Corporate Office

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit was founded in 1941 in Dallas, Texas, by Travis Dickey. The company operates a chain of barbecued and grilled meat restaurants across the US. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is the largest barbecue franchise in America.

The company began franchising in 1994. Roland Dickey, Jr., was placed as CEO in 2006. QSR Magazine listed Dickey’s Barbecue Pit as one of the “Best Franchise Deals” in 2012. National Restaurant News also awarded Dickey’s Barbecue Pit a spot on their “Top 10 Chain Growth.”

In 2015, the company began using a data collection service called Smoke Stack to try to improve customer traffic by monitoring sales figures.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit continues to use the same barbecue recipe since 1941. Today, there are more than 520 locations in 43 states. Headquarters for Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is located in Dallas, Texas.

Taco Time was founded by Ron Fraedrick, in 1959 in Eugene, Oregon. Fraedrick took out a second mortgage on his home and borrowed an additional $5,000 to get started. His idea for a walk-up taco stand near the university was very successful.

The first franchise was located in Tacoma, Washington, in 1962. Over the next decade, the company grew rapidly and by the end of the 1960s, there were 48 locations in 7 western states. Today, Taco Time has more than 300 franchised locations in the US, as well as international locations in Canada, Kuwait, and the Netherlands.

The company was purchased by Kahala Brands in 2003 and headquarters were moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. Taco Time features the usual tacos and other Mexican-style foods, such as nachos, but the company also offers a unique crispy burrito and salads to its menu that most casual Mexican food chains do not offer.

In February 2023, Ontario, Canada’s, biggest Taco Time location closed permanently after 30 years in business.

In June 2023, some Taco Time locations stopped accepting cash as a means of payment.

Marie Callender’s Corporate Office

Marie Callender’s began in the 1930’s when Marie Callender and her husband Cal, found it difficult to make ends meet. Marie began making pies and had her son, Don deliver them on his bicycle. Don Callender began selling his mother’s pies wholesale to restaurants in Orange County, California.

The first restaurant opened in 1948 and Don named it after his mother.

Today, Marie Callender’s has 74 locations, mostly in California, and a few locations in Mexico. The company offers mostly American cuisine, an extensive salad bar, and pies to be eaten at the restaurant or pies can be purchased at the front counter to go.

The company is also well-known for offering favorite meals and pies frozen in most major grocery stores.

The company filed for bankruptcy in June of 2011 and abruptly closed 31 low-performing locations. Bankruptcy proceedings finished under the control of Wayzata Investments Partners.

In February 2021, the company announced that it would need to raise prices due to the increase in wholesale prices of staples such as wheat and sugar.

The company is known for its advertisements featuring imitations of Marlon Brando’s “godfather” character. Typical lines include “A pizza you can’t refuse” and “I know your neighborhood”.

Smokey Bones was founded in 1999 in Orlando, Florida. The company is a chain of American casual restaurants that feature barbequed and grilled meats. The restaurant chain is well known for its smoky flavored ribs.

The company was sold to Barbeque Integrated, Inc. in 2007 for $80 million. At this time, the company has 66 locations in 16 states on the East coast of the US and has approximately 3,700 full time employees.

Smokey Bones is undergoing a complete remodeling of all locations, which is expected to be completed in 2017. The former log cabin type of decor is being replaced with more modern furniture, big screen televisions and extended bar areas.

In October 2020, the company poked fun at politics by offering “Left Wings” and “Right Wings”. Chicken wings, that is.
