Rent-A-Wreck was founded in 1968 in Los Angeles, California. The company began as a marketing idea, with used cars being rented in neighborhood locations, rather than airports. The company rents cars generally purchased used from other rental companies.
The name of the company caused many people to take a second look. Positive write ups in The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, as well as interest by TV host Mike Wallace, gave the company plenty of free advertising. The first franchise came in 1973. Today, the company has franchised locations in 41 states. The company is best known for renting to younger persons and those with less than stellar credit.
Rent-A-Wreck is now owned by JJF Management, who acquired the company in 2006. Some locations now offer airport service, or airport pick up and delivery. The company recently started a wheelchair van rental program for the disabled.
In February 2018, a judge dismissed a bankruptcy claim by the company stating that the company was not bankrupt and that this was nothing more than creative bookkeeping.

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE IN HACKETTSTOWN, NJ!!!
My car broke down and I needed to rent a car urgently to get to and from work. I chose Hackettstown location because it is on my way home. I was in the uber on my way to pick up the car, 10 minutes before my reservation I get a call from Hackettstown location asking me for utility bills, 2 pay stubs, proof of full coverage insurance. I told them that I did not have all those documents and that should have been made known when I made the reservation, not as i am in a cab literally one exit away. The lady that called me kept putting me on hold. Then when I asked her if she was going to let me rent or not because I had asked the uber driver to pull over because I didnt want my cab to be more expensive than needed if I wasnt going to get a rental, the lady actually LAUGHED at my frustration. I called her out and she kept saying “I didnt laugh ma’am, I wasnt laughing ma’am ” as she was clearly giggling with someone there in the office. I told her she was being rude and insensitive and I canceled my reservation. I made a reservation with a location nearby. 5 minutes later I get a call from Hackettaown, different (older) lady on the phone balantly LIED to me and told me that the location that I had selected didn’t have a car for me and that Hackettstown was the only one that had a car. I went to the new location anyways and they helped me right away. She also HAD TO LIE TO ME AGAIN when she said that the other lady was not laughing on the phone. Ridiculous!
Not only I am extremely tired now after spending nearly two hours after my long 13 hr shift (I’m a registered nurse and worked ovwrnight) I am extremely disappointed that a big company like Rent a Wreck have this type of humans representing their stores. Sadly.

Your Seattle, WA (SEA) on 3000 S. 176th St. Have one or more Very dishonest agents representing you there. My grandson and I went on a Charles Stanley Alaskan Cruise, July 7th – July 14th. I rented a car there for two days, from July 14th at 10:00 – July 16th at 10:00.
When returning the car, (the man that checked us in was different than the one who checked us out.), complained of a small scratch on the RR rim. (about 3″x1/8″ ) He said that I curbed the rim. I told him that I didn’t hit or curb anything. It resulted in a very heated argument. In came the man that checked out the car to me on the 7th. He agreed with me and told me not to worry about it, He would handle it. He then drove us to the airport. Yes, the airport. the other guy refused, said that they couldn’t drive us there, but to the drop lot.
On September 9th I received a letter from Alternative claims Management for a claim of $3,427.45 form B&M Auto Repair. This is still going on. I don’t know if anyone is investigating this or not, But I have written a letter to CEO: Kenneth L. Blum Sr. about this. So far no reply, but harassment from ACM continues. My Advice; do rent a car from these people. Glenn F. Hunt III. Norlina, NC 27563-0177 Ph: (252)701-XXXX.

i was a loyal customer up until the present when i brought a insurance claim to your company because i have been renting from rent a wreck for the past year at least 6 months continuously when i had a blow out and they treated me like i was a total stranger as if i was lying about my claim. I was treated unjust and I have been incurring all of these extra fees on top of your personnel blatantly lied to me about the charges that i incurred! Please have someone contact me A.S.A.P. I would like this matter resolved. I would like a full refund for any extra charges that incurred. I feel as though i am owed the price of the tire that i purchased and the one your company charged me plus mounting and balancing . Thank you
