BP is a British oil and gas company with worldwide headquarters in London, England.

The company has its origins in the 1909 founding of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, which was established as a subsidiary of Burmah Oil Company to exploit oil that was discovered in Iran.

The Anglo-Persian Oil Company’s name was changed in 1935 to Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, and then to British Petroleum in 1954.

History

It was owned by the British Government until 1979, when the company began to privatize in stages. The privatization was completed in 1987.

Today BP is one of the six oil and gas supermajors, and the sixth largest oil and gas company in the world.

BP operates in all parts of the oil and gas industry as a vertically integrated company, including exploration, production, refining, distribution, marketing, power generation, petrochemicals, and trading.

BP’s primary listing is on the London Stock Exchange but the company also trades in New York and Frankfurt.

John D. Rockefeller founded the Standard Oil Company in 1870.

In 1911, the Supreme Court ruled that Standard Oil had to be split into 34 oil companies amid a public outcry that the government take action against the company for monopolizing the market.

Two of those companies were Jersey Standard (Standard Oil Company of New Jersey), which eventually became Exxon, and Socony (Standard Oil Company of New York), which eventually became Mobil.

History

Over the next few decades, Jersey Standard became the largest oil producer in the world. At the same time, Socony acquired companies and stakes in other companies. The company started to produce chemicals as well as produce and refine oil.

Meanwhile, Jersey Standard changed its name to Exxon and Socony changed its name to Mobil.

The two companies first worked together in a joint venture in Indonesia.

In 1998 Exxon and Mobil signed a $73.3 billion dollar agreement to merge and form a new company, Exxon Mobil Corporation.

ExxonMobil is the largest of the world’s supermajors and is responsible for 3% of the total worldwide oil output at 3.921 million barrels per day.

Today ExxonMobil is the third largest company in the world and is ranked #5 on the Forbes list of the World’s Most Valuable Brands . ExxonMobil has 76,900 employees and had $453.123 billion in revenue in 2012.

Hollywood Video was founded in 1988 by Mark Wattles.

By 1993 the company had 16 stores. That same year, Hollywood Video became a public company, trading on the NASDAQ under the symbol HLYW. This initial public offering netted the company over $10 million.

By 1998 the company had 1,000 stores in 43 states and was the second biggest video rental and retailer in the United States after Blockbuster Entertainment.

Hollywood Video was bought by Movie Gallery in 2005.

The rise of Hollywood Video was the rise of the popularity of home movie rentals.

With the increasing popularity of services such as on-demand, Netflix, and $1 rentals in grocery stores, video rental businesses were unable to remain profitable.

With hundreds of millions of dollars in liabilities, Movie Gallery filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in 2010.

Outback Steakhouse was founded in 1988 by Bob Basham, Chris T. Sullivan, Trudy Cooper, and Tim Gannon.

Outback Steakhouse is an Australian-themed restaurant, with an emphasis on casual dining and large portions at affordable prices.

History

The first restaurant was opened in Tampa, Florida.

Outback’s parent company changed its name to OSI Restaurant Partners in 2006.

In 2007 the private equity firms Bain Capital and Catterton Partners bought OSI Restaurant Partners for $3.2 billion.

The company became Bloomin’ Brands in 2012 and went public in August of 2012 at $11 per share.

Bloomin’ Brands operates the restaurants Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Wine Bar, and Roy’s.

During the pandemic of 2020, Outback offered customer pickup of just about every item on the menu.

Outback Steakhouse has 1,319 restaurants in 22 countries throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, including over 100 locations in South Korea.

In early December 2023, Outback announced that restaurants would be open regular hours on Christmas Eve for those who are traveling.

Robert Morgan and Anthony A. Martino founded AAMCO in 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The name comes from the initials of Martino’s name plus Co for company. Martino liked this as, not only did it use his initials, but it also placed his business higher in the yellow page rankings of its day, since those were done alphabetically. The original name of the company was AAMCO Auto and Truck Repair. Quickly realizing the complexity and failure rate of automatic transmissions of the times, Martino quickly decided to drop the “Auto and Truck Repair”, and focus solely on transmissions, where the company would stay focused until 2007.

After 2007, the company again realized that, with the modern transmissions of today being more reliable, they should include more car care options. The name of the company is now AAMCO Transmissions and Total Car Care.

History

AAMCO is a transmission-repair company that operates as a franchise, with the first franchise opening in New Jersey in 1963.

Morgan and Martino also founded MAACO, an auto body shop franchise. Martino eventually ended his affiliation with AAMCO to manage MAACO.

Morgan was the first CEO of the company and was succeeded by his son, Keith Morgan.

In 2006, American Capital, Ltd. bought AAMCO Transmissions.

In January 2017, American Driveline Systems, the franchiser of the AAMCO and Cottman Transmission & Total Auto Care brands, was acquired by Transom Capital Group.

AAMCO ranked near the top in the Entrepreneur site of the top 500 Franchises in America in 2023.

In September 2022, a former black executive of AAMCO filed a discrimination lawsuit.

The company now has more than 500 franchises across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, 5,000 employees, and $450 million in revenue in 2022.
