The company was purchased by New York Life Insurance Company in 1989 and became publicly traded in 1992 on the NASDAQ.

Express Scripts offers pharmacy benefit managements (PBM) services to managed care organizations, health insurers, employers, union-sponsored benefit plans, government health programs, third-party administrators, primary care physicians, among others.

One of Express Scripts’ biggest clients is the United States Department of Defense’s Tricare program.

UnitedHealth Group Incorporated was founded under the name Charter Med Incorporated in 1974 in Minnesota.

UnitedHealthCare Corporation was created in 1977 to reorganize the company and became the parent company of Charter Med.

In 1995 the company acquired The MetraHealth Companies Inc, which was a group health care provider, for $1.65 billion.

History

UnitedHealth Group began to acquire more companies and add more segments to their health coverage. For example, Oxford Health Plans was acquired in 2004 and became UnitedHealth’s New York-based small group contract product.

In 2005 UnitedHealth acquired PacifiCare health Systems for $9.2 billion.

By the company’s 2011 reorganization, it had 13 different operating segments and brand names. In 2011 the company reorganized to retire the brands adopted following acquisitions and adopt the unified UnitedHealthcare brand.

Today UnitedHealth Group is the largest single health carrier in the United States. Through all of its subsidiaries and divisions, the company serves about 70 million people nationwide.

UnitedHealth trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol UNH, is a member of the S&P 500, has 133,000 employees, and had $101.862 billion in revenue in 2011.

The company was created as a spinoff of Coastal States Gas Corporation in 1980 and at the time was the largest corporate spinoff in history.

Valero immediately took over the natural gas operations of LoVaca Gathering Company. The company acquired its first oil refinery in 1984.

The company grew, acquiring companies with refineries all over the world, as well as hundreds of gas stations.

Today Valero owns 16 petroleum refineries with a daily capacity of 3 million barrels and almost 2,000 gas stations over the U.S. Canada, U.K., Aruba, and Ireland under the names Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar, Beacon, and Texaco.

Valero is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol VLO, is part of the S&P 500, has 10,222 employees, and had $125.987 billion in revenue in 2011.

Thomas Edison had many business interests and several electricity-related companies before 1889. In 1889 Drexel, Morgan & Co, a company formed by J.P. Morgan and Anthony Drexel, helped to merge those companies into Edison General Electric Company.

At the same time, Thomson-Houston Electric Company was growing and acquiring assets.

General Electric (GE) was formed by the merger of Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company.

History

In 1896 GE was one of the original 12 companies listed on the newly formed Dow Jones Industrial Average. Today it is one of the only original companies still listed, though it has not been listed continuously.

Today GE operates through five business segments: Energy, Capital Finance, Technology and Infrastructure, Transportation, and Consumer & Industrial.

The company was founded in 1917 as Phillips Petroleum Company by L.E. Phillips and Frank Phillips of Oklahoma.

The first Phillips 66 gas station opened in Wichita, Kansas in 1927.

History

For the next 40 years, Phillips 66 expanded to have gas stations throughout the United States as well as in Canada.

In 1967 the company became only the second oil company, after Texaco, to sell and market gasoline in all 50 states.

In 2002 Phillips 66 merged with Conoco to form the new company ConocoPhillips.

In 2012 Phillips 66 was spun off from ConocoPhillips. The company began trading on the New York Stock exchange on May 1, 2012.

Today Phillips 66 owns 15 refineries in five countries with a net crude capacity of 2.2 million barrels per day. It also owns 50% of DCP Midstrem, LLC, natural gas company, and a 50% stake in Chevron Phillips Chemical Co.
