BB&T Corporation (Branch Banking & Trust) is a financial services holding company.

BB&T was founded by Alpheus Branch and Thomas Jefferson Hadley in 1872 as Branch and Hadley.

In 1922 the company added a security division, and the next year in 1923 it reached $4 million in assets.

History

In 1995 BB&T merged with Southern National Bank, giving the new company 437 branches in 220 cities in the Carolinas and Virginia.

From 2000 to 2005 BB&T acquired several smaller banks and expanding into Tennessee, Kentucky, and Florida.

In 2008 the bank had to be bailed out with $3.1 billion through the U.S. Treasury’s Troubled Asset Program.

Today BB&T Corporation serves customers, businesses, and government entities through 1,800 branches across a dozen states. The company is one of the oldest banks in North Carolina.

The company was founded by Dean R. Honas when he bought an evaporated milk processing facility and subsequently began to acquire other dairy plants, diversifying its product line.

Today Dean Foods is the United States’ largest milk bottler. The company’s products include milk, ice cream, cultured dairy products, and beverages under the Borden, Pet, Country Fresh, Meadow Gold, TruMoo, Berkeley Farms, and Garelick Farms.

Danaher was formed in 1968 when DMG, Inc. was reorganized into Diversified Mortgage Investors, Inc. The company subsequently changed its name to Danaher Corporation in 1984.

Danaher operates in five segments: Life Sciences & Diagnostics providing research and clinical tools, Test & Measurement producing electronic measurement instruments, Industrial Technologies producing product identification, motion control equipment, and sensors, Environmental producing turbine pumps and air and water analysis and treatment equipment, and Dental, producing orthodontic bracket systems and lab products.

Nucor Corporation manufactures and sells steel and steel products globally.

The company can trace its roots back to the Olds Motor Vehicle Company which was founded in 1897. The automaker went through several transformations, notably into a truck manufacturer in the 1930’s, a lawn mower manufacturer in the 1950’s, and a nuclear services company in the 1960’s.

While operating as a nuclear services company, it acquired a steel joist manufacturer named Vulcraft.

History

Vulcraft proved to be the company’s only profitable business. At the time the company had trouble getting good quality and low-priced steel to use in manufacturing. It therefore began operating its own steel mill.

In 1972 the company changed its name to Nucor and began to expand into other steel products including hot and cold rolled steel,  steel joists, and metal buildings.

Today Nucor is North America’s largest recycler of scrap metal, recycling 25 million tons of steel per year in 23 scrap-based steel production mills.

TRW Automotive is a supplier of components, modules, and systems for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

TRW Automotive in its present form was created when aerospace company Northrop Grumman purchased competitor TRW in 2002 and subsequently sold its automotive division to Blackstone Group, a private equity firm.

Blackstone took the company public in 2004.

TRW originally stood for Thompson Ramo Woodridge and was formed in 1958 when Thompson Products merged with Ramo-Wooldridge.

TRW Automotive produces products such as brake, steering, and suspension systems, airbags, seat belts, security and safety electronic systems, body controls, engine valves, and camera and radar-based driver assistance.
