Union Mutual life Insurance was incorporated in Maine in 1848, providing life and endowment insurance. At that time, the company’s headquarters were located in Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1940 Union Mutual acquired Massachusetts Accident Company’s health and accident insurance business segment, therefore expanding its operations.

History

In the 1960’s Union Mutual established its group disability business, which would become the company’s flagship product.

In 1986 Union Mutual became the first mutual insurance company to demutualize. The company then began the process to become a publicly traded company, with the new name Unum.

Today Unum Group’s main subsidiaries in the United states include Unum Life Insurance Company of America, Provident Life and Accident, First Unum Life, Colonial Life & Accident Insurance, and Paul Revere Life Insurance Company.

Unum Group trades publicly on the New York Stock exchange under the symbol UNM, is a member of the S&P 500, is #235 in the Fortune 500, has 9,200 employees, and had $10.34 billion in revenue in 2013.

Land O’Lakes is a member-owned agricultural cooperative which focuses on the dairy industry.

The cooperative was founded in 1921 by representatives of 320 co-op creameries as the Minnesota Cooperative Creameries Association. It was formed to improve the quality and marketing of butter, thus increasing the profitability of dairying.

In 1924 the cooperative named its sweet cream butter Land O’Lakes, a play on the state of Minnesota’s nickname “Land of 10,000 Lakes.”

History

The butter was so popular that the cooperative’s name was often confused with the name of its product, and so in 1926 the organization adopted the Land O’Lakes name.

Today Land O’Lakes is one of the nation’s largest dairy cooperatives with 4,000 farmer/members and 900 member associations.

The cooperative makes over 300 dairy products from the 12 billion pounds of milk that members supply annually.

Land O’Lakes operates dairy facilities in the United States, doing business in all 50 states and 60 countries worldwide.

Land O’Lakes is #226 in the Fortune 500.

Baker Hughes is an oilfield services company, providing the oil and gas industry with services and products for drilling, completion, production, and formation evaluation.

Sharp-Hughes Tool Company was formed in 1909 in Texas by Walter Benona Sharp and Howard R. Hughes. The company manufactured a two-cone drill bit that enabled rotary drilling in deeper formations that had been possible previously.

Walter Sharp died in 1915 and Hughes bought out his half of the business, renaming the company the Hughes Tool Company.

History

Over the years the company acquired many oilfield pioneers including Brown Oil Tools, CTC, EDECO, Elder Oil Tools, Milchem and Newpark, Eastman Chistensen, Drilex, Teleco, Tri-State, Wilson, Aquaness, Chemlink,  Petrolite, Western Atlas, and BJ Services Company.
