DSW can trace its roots back to 1969 when Jay L. Schottenstein opened as the Schonac corporation as a shoe licensee for Value City.

DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) opened its first store in 1991 in Dublin, Ohio. In 1998 Value City Department Stores purchased DSW.

History

In 2004 Retail Ventures consolidated subsidiaries of the then-defunct Value City company. DSW was operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Retail Ventures until DSW was spun-off in 2005.

Today DSW sells brand-name footwear at discount prices through 501 stores in 40 states and Puerto Rico. On average, stores are 22,000 square feet and stock 23,000 pairs of shoes.

DSW, along with 170 other shoe retailers, wrote a letter to Donald Trump in May 2019, asking him to exempt shoes from his list of items from China subject to the administrations new 25% tariff, calling the tariff “catastrophic.”

The company trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol DSW, is #872 in the Fortune 1000, has 11,800 employees, and had $2.50 billion in revenue in 2014.

The company was founded by Arthur Edward Stilwell in 1887 with the goal of connecting Kansas City to the Gulf of Mexico. In 1930 Kansas City Southern added routes to Louisiana. No further expansion happened until 1993 when a route was added from Dallas, Texas to Meridian, Mississippi.

Today Kansas City Southern has a network of over 6,000 miles of rails from Missouri to Mexico. The company operates three main rail lines: Kansas City Southern Railway (KCSR), KCS, and KCSM. LSI Corporation was founded by Wilfred Corrigan, Bill O’Meaa, Rob Walker, and Mitchell Bohn in 1981 under the name LSI Logic. Six million in start-up funds was invested by venture capitalists, namely Sequioa Capital.

The company grew through acquisitions and development of new technology, notably CoreWare technology in 1992. The company was a pioneer of system-on-chip (SoC) devices.

In 2014 Singapore-based Avago Technologies acquired LSI Corporation in a $6.6 billion cash deal. Avago is a semiconductor developer that makes Integrated Circuits for data storage applications.

Old Dominion Freight Line was founded by Earl and Lillian Congdon when they started running a single truck between Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia.

History

The company first expanded to North Carolina and South Virginia. When the trucking industry was deregulated in the 1980’s Old Dominion Freight Line expanded into Florida, Tennessee, and California, as well as Chicago and Dallas.

Today the company operates a fleet of 25,000 trailers and 6,200 tractors from 220 service centers all over the United States. Less-than-truckload (LTL), which is freight from different shippers in one truckload, accounts for most of the company’s business. Old Dominion also offers logistics services including supply chain consulting and warehousing.

Old Dominion Freight Line trades publicly on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol ODFL, is a member of the S&P 400, is #876 in the Fortune 1000, has 24,271 employees, and had $4.015 million in revenue in 2020.

In March 2023, Old Dominion reported certain less-than-truckload (“LTL”) operating metrics for February 2023. Revenue per day decreased by 2.9% as compared to February 2022 due to a 12.4% decrease in LTL tons per day.

In February 2023, The Motley Fool stated that a bull market was on the way and that buying stock in Old Dominion would be a prudent move.
