Robinhood was founded in April 2013 by Vladimir Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, who had previously built high-frequency trading platforms for financial institutions in New York City.

Robinhood Markets is an American financial services company that allows users to purchase stocks, crypto currency, and exchange-traded funds easily and without commissions by using a mobile phone app.

The company earns its revenue from three main sources: interest earned on customers’ cash balances, selling order information to high-frequency traders (a practice for which the SEC opened an investigation into the company in September 2020) and margin lending.

History

In March 2022, Robinhood launched the Robinhood Cash Card, a debit card that allows users to automatically invest in assets like stocks and crypto when spending money.

Robinhood Markets went public on the NASDAQ in July 2021 under the ticker symbol HOOD.

FTX, the cryptocurrency platform, has approximately $450 million invested in Robinhood. It is unknown what will happen to the company’s shares since it has filed for bankruptcy and is being investigated for fraud.

Randstad Corporate Office

Randstad

Randstad was founded in 1960 by Frits Goldschmeding and Ger Daleboudt. Both were studying economics at the time at VU University Amsterdam. Goldschmeding was supposed to write a thesis at the VU University Amsterdam and his professor advised him to write a thesis on temporary employment since there was hardly any literature at the time. After completing his thesis, Goldschmeding decided to turn the subject of his idea into a company. The first flyers for the firm were typed in Goldschmeding’s attic room in the student house on Sloterkade in Amsterdam.

Today, Randstad is one of the largest international HR management and temporary employment agencies in the world.

In 2019, Google contracted Randstad to provide facial recognition services for its Pixel 4 authentication feature. Google’s end goal with the project was to make the feature more inclusive by collecting facial data from people with dark skin, and those participating in the research were given a $5 gift certificate. However, the New York Daily News reported that Randstad project leaders allegedly directed its workers to maximize data collection by deceiving participants and targeting homeless people in Atlanta, Georgia.

History

Randstad stated that, after hearing concerns about how information was presented to participants and obtaining consent, the project was temporarily suspended and project leaders were retrained. After the Daily News published its report, Google said it had shut down its field research and was investigating the allegations.

The company recently stated that it believed that unemployment would continue to grow in 2023, despite a strong labor market at the end of 2022.

Liberty Tax Service was founded in 1997 in Canada by John Hewitt, co-founder of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service.

Liberty Tax is a franchised chain of tax preparation services known for using guerrilla advertising in the form of the State of Liberty, Uncle Sam, and calculators to attract attention.

In 2009, Liberty Tax was ordered to pay $1.3 million for engaging in unfair business practices related to its refund anticipation loans. It later settled with the Department of Justice over allegations that its franchisee locations inflated some customer tax returns between 2013 and 2018.

History

As of 2021, Liberty Tax Service is the third-largest institutional tax preparation service provider in the United States and second-largest in Canada.

In August 2022, Liberty Tax sued the creators of the popular Netflix series Better Call Saul saying that the series stole not only their name but the infamous blow-up statue of liberty that is featured in the series.

In December 2022, the company is again being sued by Washington, D. C.’s attorney general for a misleading and deceptive incentive program.

Amerigas

Amerigas was founded in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, in 1959. It’s the largest retail propane distributor in the USA serving over 1.7 million customers from all 50 states.

Amerigas operates a subsidiary of UGI Corporation.

On August 21, 2019, UGI Corporation acquired the portion of AmeriGas that it did not already own.

Prior to the acquisition, AmeriGas shareholder, Peter Votto, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court to halt the deal due to “potential conflicts of interest faced by the Board.”

In February 2022, Amerigas entered into an agreement with Global Clean Energy to purchase and distribute renewable LPG.

In August 2022, Amerigas acquired forklift cylinder exchange company South Florida Lift Gas for an undisclosed amount.

In August 2023, the company issued a recall for propane barbecue grill tanks sold in southern and central New Hampshire and the Greater Boston area between July 27 and August 2, after identifying a potential fire hazard.

Hampton Inn was founded in 1984 in Memphis, Tennessee. The company operates a chain of American hotels trademarked by Hilton.

Hampton Inn offers mid-ranged priced hotel rooms with limited food and beverage service. Most of the locations are franchised and is one of the largest hotel franchises in the world.

At the end of 2019, Hampton Inn had more than 2,544 locations in 30 countries and more than 266,000 rooms.

History

In October 2014, the Hampton by Hilton brand launched in China through a licensing agreement with Plateno Hotels Group. The first of 400 Chinese Hampton hotels opened in 2015.

A similar agreement with the Wasl Asset Management group will bring Hampton by Hilton to Dubai.

Many locations are now being managed by HP Hotels, a hotel management service company.

The Hampton Inn in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, reopened on December 7th, 2022, after being closed for repairs due to Hurricane Ian.

In August 2023, a federal court in Pennsylvania found the general manager of the Quakertown Hampton Inn guilty of contempt of court after failure to pay back more than $10,000 in back wages and fines.
