The Sacramento Zoo opened in 1927 with just 40 animals on 4.2 acres. Today, the zoo has 500 animals on 14.3 acres. The zoo was free until 1965, when they began charging a 25 cent admission fee.

The zoo is a non-profit organization which focuses on conservation and animal welfare. The zoo has opened numerous new attractions, including a penguin exhibit in 2007, the Tall Wonders giraffe habitat in 2010, and the Small Wonders of Africa in 2014.

The Sacramento Zoo feels that the focus of zoo’s has changed over the years; from housing animals as exhibits, to an emphasis on conservation, education, and recreation.

Foster Farms was founded in 1939 by Max and Verda Foster in Modesto, California. The couple initially started off with turkeys, with the back porch of the house being the company office. Foster Farms operates a large West coast poultry company.

Today, the company is one of the largest poulty producers in the West, known more for their chickens than turkeys. The company has fought hard to keep the word “natural” in their products and attempting to keep the poultry industry free from animal abuse or other types of animal mismanagement.

Foster Farms is still owned and operated by the Foster Family. In 2013, the company was certified as a “humane producer” by the American Humane Society.

Buehler’s Fresh Foods was founded in 1929 in New Philadelphia, Ohio, by Ed and Helen Buehler. The company operates a chain of grocery stores, which focus on local and sustainable food products. Buehler’s is the largest purchaser of Amish produce at the Mt. Hope Auction.

The company currently has 14 locations in the northeast part of the state of Ohio. Company headquarters are now located in Wooster, Ohio. Buehler family members still own and operate the company under the parent name of E&H Family Group. E&H for Ed and Helen.

Buehler’s Fresh Foods closed two locations in 2016, but are interested in adding different ventures to the company name, including ACE Hardware stores and Scenic River Coffee Company.
