Town Sports International Gym was founded in 1973 by squash enthusiast Harry Saint. He began with St. John Squash Racket, a public squash playing club that was unique at a time when most squash players belonged to exclusive clubs. Saint opened two more squash locations, including Town Squash.

By the late 70s, Saint realized that his squash clubs were not appealing to the general public but newly introduced machines like Nautilus and stair climbing were becoming popular. He took advantage of this and began adding these machines while introducing monthly memberships, as opposed to yearly membership fees.

History

Today, Town Sports International is a premier fitness and sports club, creating a sound business model that has provided strong profits and allowed the company to build new clubs and acquire many underperforming mom-and-pop operations.

Its brands include New York Sports Clubs, Boston Sports Clubs, Philadelphia Sports Clubs, Washington Sports Clubs, Lucille Roberts, TMPL Gym and Total Woman Gym and Spa. The company went public on the NASDAQ in 2006.

There are currently 155 locations in New York, Connecticut, Boston, Rhode Island, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington, D.C., California, and Switzerland, with the majority of these being located in New York.

TSI recently announced expansions to include Florida and Puerto Rico.

In August 2019, Town Sports invited SoulCycle and Equinox members to work out for free at their locations after Soul Cycle members called for a boycott when it was discovered that the chairman of Soul Cycle/Equinox was hosting a fundraiser for Donald Trump’s reelection.

Kum and Go can trace its roots back to 1959 when William Krause and Tony Gentle founded the Hamptom Oil Company. This later became the Krause Gentle Corporation and in 1963, the company introduced their first convenience stores at their gas stations.

The name Kum and Go, a play on the word “come” using the Krause and Gentle initials, was adopted in 1975 to unify all of the convenience stores under a single name. Part of the company’s franchise success was due in part to a unique marketing campaign in which they featured the Kum & Go “Gold cup”. The cup was introduced in late 2008 for the holiday season. It featured an 8oz coffee mug for $50.00 and benefitted customers by offering unlimited coffee and soda fountain refills for 2009 at any Kum & Go location.

History

Company headquarters moved to Des Moine, Iowa, in 1988. The company underwent tremendous expansion in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Today, there are 400 locations in 11 states. Convenience Store News listed Kum and Go as the 23rd largest convenience store chain in 2010.

In addition to gasoline, motor oil, and other automotive supplies, the company is known for its merchandise, which features their logo, including t-shirts, mugs, and baseball caps with built-in bottle openers.

William’s grandson’s Kyle and Tanner Krause are now in charge of the daily operations for the company. Tanner Krause stated in an interview that knowing he is responsible for the livelihood of the more than 5,000 employees of the company makes him think hard before making any major decisions.

With that in mind, Tanner expanded full-time status to more than 2,000 formerly part-time employees, making them eligible for health insurance, paid time off, and maternity leave.

Company headquarters are located at the Krause Center in Des Moine, Iowa.

After his return from WWI, Adolf Dassler and his brother Rudolf began making shoes for sporting events out of his mother’s laundry room in 1924. With electricity being unreliable, the brothers often had to pedal a bicycle to generate electricity for their equipment.

Dassler was the innovator of modern spiked shoes for sporting events, removing the heavy metal spikes in favor of rubber and canvas. He convinced Jesse Owens to wear his shoes for the 1936 summer Olympics and after winning 4 gold medals, the reputation of Dassler’s shoes became famous worldwide.

The brothers had a falling out in 1947, with Rudolf forming what would become Puma brand and Adolf forming Adidas. Although it is a popular urban legend that the name is an acronym for All Day I Dream About Sports, the name was actually formed from “Adi” (a nickname for Adolf) and “Das” (from “Dassler”).

Today, Adidas is one of the most well-known brands of sporting apparel, equipment, and shoes in the world. The company also owns Reebok, Runtastic, and Matix. The company sponsors numerous sporting events and hires athletes such as Lionel Messi to promote their clothing and shoe line.

With Nike having controversy swirling around the company over spokesperson Colin Kaepernick, Adidas appears to be benefitting from this, with sales up more than 17.6% compared to Nike’s 6.8%.

The mining giant BHP Group got its start in Founded in 1885 in the isolated mining town of Broken Hill, New South Wales. Incorporated in 1885, the first consignment of Broken Hill ore (48 tons, 5 cwt, 3grs) was smelted at the Intercolonial Smelting and Refining Company’s works at Spotswood, Melbourne, Australia.

Today, BHP is the largest mining company in the world and Australia’s third-largest company by revenue.

History

In 1915, the company started manufacturing steel in Newcastle. This plant was closed in 1999.

In the 1950s, BHP began oil and gas exploration, which became an increasing focus following oil and natural gas discoveries in the Bass Strait.

In 2001, BHP merged with the Billiton mining company to form BHP Billiton.

On 8 November 2007, BHP Billiton announced it was seeking to purchase rival mining group Rio Tinto Group in an all-share deal. The initial offer of 3.4 shares of BHP Billiton stock for each share of Rio Tinto was rejected by the board of Rio Tinto for “significantly undervaluing” the company.

In 2015, BHP Billiton spun off a number of its subsidiaries in South Africa and Southern Africa to form a new company known as South32.

Also in 2015, the company was involved in the Bento Rodrigues dam collapse. This was to date the worst environmental disaster in the history of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

In February 2017, BHP Billiton announced a $2.2 billion investment in the new BP platform in the Gulf of Mexico.

In May 2017, with much of the former Billiton assets having been disposed of, BHP Billiton began to rebrand itself as BHP, at first in Australia and then globally.

In April 2019, the company’s efforts to streamline production will result in the loss of an estimated 700 jobs, but no further details were released at that time regarding where the cuts would take place.

Headquarters for the company remain in Melbourne, Australia.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America was founded in 1991 by Richard Stephenson after his mother passed away from cancer in 1988. Stephenson purchased the American International Hospital in Zion, Illinois, and expanded the oncology center, renaming it the Mary Brown Stephenson Radiation Oncology Center.

The company opened a second hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1991. After purchasing the former Parkview Hospital in Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 2004, the company completely remodeled the location, as well as expanded it, for its opening in 2005.

History

A treatment center was opened in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2008 and in 2012, a facility was opened in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2015, it opened a patient concierge and information office in Mexico City. The company also advertises in the Middle East, the Caribbean and Latin America, offering patients in these regions the opportunity to pursue treatment at one of its U.S. comprehensive cancer care and research centers.

The company moved headquarters to Boca Raton, Florida, from Illinois in 2015.

Each hospital has earned accreditations and certifications from the Joint Commissions, American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, and the National Accreditation Program of Breast Centers.

CTCA was harshly criticized by oncologist David Gorsky for practicing “Woo” or pseudoscientific treatments, such as homeopathy.

In late 2018, the non-profit group Truth in Advertising stated that the majority of cancer center ads are very misleading and deceptive. CTCA was one group that was named.

In July 2019, CTCA notified approximately 3,900 patients that there had been a data-breech and their personal information may have been stolen.
