Schroeder's Department Store

Brothers Peter and Joseph Schroeder opened Schroeder’s Department Store in 1891. The original building was across the street from where the store stands today. In 1899, the father of the brothers purchased the three-story building across the street and even paid to have bricks shipped in from the port of Sturgeon Bay and delivered via train.

The store has since survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, the recession in 2008, and nearly every other competing store in the area. One way in which the company has found a means of surviving is renting out the now unused portions on the upper floors. The company likens it to a shopping mall without walls.

The company published a book, including old photographs of the business, in June 2018.

History

Two sisters, AJ Schroeder-Ashenbrenner, and Teresa Kronforst, whose great-grandfather was Joseph Schroeder, are the last Schroeder’s to operate the business. Their father John, who ran the store virtually by himself, unexpectedly passed away from cancer in 2008.

Schroeder’s Department Store still has its corporate office in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

American Country Home Store

Maggie Wynja loved classic Americana styled furniture and accessories. However, living in Ames, Iowa, she found that she had to travel pretty far to find the things she loved, so she opened her own shop right in her hometown.

The American Country Home Store features quality made, solid pine furniture, rugs, sofas, wicker furniture, and bedding. The company opened an online store in 2010 so that others around the country could share her taste in furniture and motifs.

The company once was an authorized dealer for Yield House catalogs, but today they offer their own catalog of items, which is also featured on the iPad.

History

American Country Home Store still maintains headquarters in Ames, Iowa.

When Mark Zuckerberg from Facebook was being grilled by congress, Arlo Gilbert and Scott Hertel were shocked by the questions the lawmakers asked. It was clear that almost no one knew the basics of what cybersecurity was and how private data is stored and used.

Osano was born.

Most people don’t understand their privacy rights when they sign up for a platform like Facebook or Google. Osano takes these long and complicated legal statements and puts them into a rating system or score, similar to credit ratings. This helps people know whether companies are more likely to use your data or if they use it only sometimes or only part of it.

History

Osano offers this service free via a browser plugin that currently works on Google Chrome, Safari, FireFox, and a mobile app for Android. The company is currently working on one for IOS phones.

Osano has a database of approximately 400 online companies at this time. The company has hired dozens of licensed attorneys to dissect the terms and conditions and established Privacy Monitor reputation scores for hundreds of the world’s most popular websites, with more added daily.

Osano was backed in 2018 by $3 million in seed funding from LiveOak Ventures.

In December 2019, Osano received another $5.4 million in Series A funding.

Osano maintains a corporate office in Austin, Texas.

Moo Corporate Office

Moo printing was founded in 2004 by Richard Moross in the UK. Moross was fascinated with printing and discovered that the entire world could be changed with an online idea.

Moross began offering printing services and he will be the first to admit that he made “every mistake in the book.” He also states that he “has things right” at this time and with a multi-million dollar company to back it up, he must be doing something right.

Moo has won several awards, including 3 WEBBY awards, has been profiled in The Financial Times, and has been listed as one of the top 10 UK start-up companies. The company serves businesses of all sizes, from start-ups and independent designers to larger organizations including Google, Airbnb, Monotype, and BuzzFeed.

History

While Moo mainly offers online printing, it does have 6 retail locations. During the coronavirus crisis in March 2020, Moo was declared an essential service and offered reduced hours of noon through 7 PM.

Field and Stream Shops Corporate Office

Field and Stream

In 2013, Dick’s Sporting Goods opened up its first Field and Stream shop in Pennsylvania, at the site of a former Dick’s location. The company planned to open approximately 35 retail locations by the end of 2017.

Field and Stream feature camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing gear. In 2018, the company sold 8 stores, located in 3 states, to Sportsmans Warehouse for $28 million.

Also in 2018, after the Parkland, Florida, shooting, Dick’s stopped the sale of all assault-type weapons at all locations, including Field and Stream stores.

History

Field and Stream stores are well-known for their displays depicting wild animals.

In early 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, most Dick’s Sporting Goods and Field and Stream stores were flooded with customers looking to stock up on everything from ammunition to camping stoves.

On March 19th, 2020, the company closed all locations, including Field and Stream stores, for two week period to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. While a nearly nation-wide closure and quarantine period has been called for until at least April 20th, at the time of this writing, the company only has plans to close for two weeks.

Headquarters for Field and Stream are located in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.
