After studying biology at Oxford, John Sherwin moved to the US to get some experience in American startup companies. Sherwin was also an athlete, which he says involves being dehydrated much of the time. A combination of Sherwin’s studies and a desire to stay hydrated led to the creation of Hydrant, Inc.

Hydrant is an e-commerce company that offers single-serving packages of flavored powders specially designed to keep people hydrated through electrolytes and salts that the body loses naturally.

Hydrant Rapid Hydration comes in two versions—with or without caffeine— and right now there are four options without caffeine: the original lime, grapefruit and blood orange, or a variety. There are three flavors with caffeine. Hydrant mostly sells through its website and Amazon, but the products are also available at 47 Whole Foods Market stores. It plans to announce new retail partners in the coming months, Kim said.

History

Hydrant is disrupting the sports drink industry with all-natural ingredients that contains about 80 percent less sugar than the typical sports drink.

In early May 2020, the company raised $5.7 million in Series A funding.

Hydrant has headquarters in New York, New York.

After experiencing considerable delays and other issues building a home in Santa Barbara, Craig Courtemanche began to create software that would solve many of the problems that plaque construction workers and contractors.

Procore sells and operates construction project management software.   In 2019, the company had annual revenue of $289.2 million.

Procore’s project management software allows teams of construction companies, property owners, project managers, contractors, and partners to collaborate on construction projects and share access to documents, planning systems, and data.

History

In February 2020, the company had filed for an IPO from the US Security and Exchange Commission.

Due to the coronavirus, quarantine, and subsequent recession, Procore dropped its request for an IPO in early May 2020 and instead raised funds equal to $5 billion.

Procore maintains its corporate office in Carpenteria, California.

Trinnette Morris had worked as a CEO, a teacher, and the principal of a school when a boyfriend casually remarked “Your food is so good, you should open your own restaurant and call it Trindy’s.” This idea stuck and in 2015, Trindy Gourmet was founded in West Palm Beach.

Morris’ mother had cooked for a living and her father had run a catering business, so she had lots of help getting started.

The restaurant offers a wide variety of foods and does catering, including corporate catering.

History

That was until the coronavirus popped up.

Morris has been creative in her attempts to keep her 5 employees paid and the business on solid ground until she is able to reopen. Morris now offers a different to-go menu daily and features desserts from the neighboring restaurant and friend Nikki’s Jazzy Sweets.

Trindy Gourmet has two locations, and while indoor seating is closed, delivery or pick up is still available.

In January 2020, Martha Stewart was stranded due to flight delays and she headed to West Palm Beach to enjoy the weather and the food at Trinity Gourmet.

The company has headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida.

LetsGetChecked, a home-delivered lab testing company, might never have come to be if it hadn’t been for a delay in the founders’ own testing for cancer.

After being kicked in the groin at a rugby match, then teenager Peter Foley, went to the hospital. They released him but when the pain continued for several weeks, he returned. No one checked for possible signs of cancer, which after months of delay, ended up being the case.

Foley knew that if home testing kits had been available, his family would have had a test done and his cancer would have been found much sooner. LetsGetChecked went live in 2015.

History

Clients are free to use any test they like- anything from vitamin deficiency tests to hormone testing, cancer screening to coronavirus testing.

The client receives the kit in the mail, follows the instructions, mails back the samples, and after the results are returned, a nurse will call the client to discuss the results.

While the company is amassing tons of private data and DNA samples, Foley says the company has no plans to give access to anyone or to sell results or DNA to anyone.

To date, the company has raised more than $42 million in funding.

In early June 2020, the company received FDA approval for “emergency” coronavirus testing for $130. The results are back in 24 hours from the time the company receives the test. Testing facilities for US customers are located in New York.

While LetsGetChecked operates out of Dublin, Ireland, there are corporate offices and testing facilities in New York, New York.

Old Country Buffet opened in 1984 with the idea that not employing wait staff and bartenders, the buffet would have a lower payroll than a more formal restaurant and a lack of waiters/waitresses might appeal to customers who preferred not to pay gratuities.

The restaurant menu was based on typical “country-style” American food, including fried chicken, hamburgers, chicken fried steak, french fries, creamed corn, and hot rolls.

The chain was initially a big success and expansion followed. By 1996, there were 250 restaurants scattered across the US.

History

Before Old Country Buffet filed for bankruptcy the first time in 2008, its parent company Buffets, Inc. had merged with Ryan’s Restaurant Group in 2006. After the 2008 Chapter 11 filing, the chain reduced some of its 626 locations and slashed debt by a whopping $700 million.  

The company filed for bankruptcy again in 2012 and yet again in 2016. With each filing, the company closed restaurant locations.

In 2014, the company was sued for salmonella poisoning and the subsequent brain damage it left behind for one patron. The company didn’t respond to the filing since the health department had fined them for 18 violations the month before. The plaintiffs were awarded more than $11 million.

The restaurant chain closed all locations during the COVID-19 crisis and subsequent quarantine. As of June 2020, a few locations have opened including one in Columbus, Georgia.

Old Country Buffet maintains a corporate office in San Antonio, Texas.
