National Public Radio replaced the National Education Radio Network in 1971. The Public Broadcasting Act, signed into law in 1967, also created the Public Broadcasting Service for television.
NPR suffered an almost fatal setback in 1983 when efforts to expand services created a deficit of nearly $7 million (equivalent to $19 million in 2022 dollars).
After a Congressional investigation and the resignation of NPR’s then-president Frank Mankiewicz, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting agreed to lend the network money in order to stave off bankruptcy.

I listened to Brooke Gladstone’s broadcast of “On the Media” this morning where she spoke of Trump, the Town Meeting he held, the CNN interview and other unsavory characters and events. I deeply appreciate Ms. Gladstone and her journalistic work. As she began the program, I was aware that the background music was the “Ave Maria”. While it is a beautiful melody, played through out the world, I find it highly offensive and inappropriate to use it it such a context. It is a SACRED hymn often used in Catholic churches for weddings, funerals and other special feast days.
To associate it with the crude topics under discussion was a tasteless editorial decision. I am disappointed in NPR and Ms. Gladstone.
