HealthSouth was founded by Richard M. Scrushy in 1984 as Amcare, Inc. The company changed its name to HealthSouth Rehabilitation Corporation in 1985.

In 2011 MWI acquired Nelson Laboratories Limited Partnership.

Today the company distributes veterinary supplies such as diagnostics, drugs, equipment, and medical supplies for animals, including pets and livestock. MWI distributes 41,000 products through more than 700 vendors.

In addition, MWI Veterinary Supply also offers pet food and nutritional supplies.

AmerisourceBergen, a pharmaceutical distributor, acquired the company in January of 2015 in a $2.5 billion deal. AmerisourceBergen bought MWI to expand its animal health business.
