In 2004 the U.S. business of British American Tobacco (Brown & Williamson) was combined with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company under the R.J. Reynolds name.

Also in December, the Supreme Court of North Carolina stated that shareholders of Reynolds American were not entitled to recover more than $59.64 per share during the merger with British American Tobacco.
