Valero Energy Corporate Office

Valero Energy Corporation is a manufacturer and marketer of power, transportation fuels, and petrochemicals.

The company was created as a spinoff of Coastal States Gas Corporation in 1980 and at the time was the largest corporate spinoff in history.

Valero immediately took over the natural gas operations of LoVaca Gathering Company. The company acquired its first oil refinery in 1984.

The company grew, acquiring companies with refineries all over the world, as well as hundreds of gas stations.

Today Valero owns 16 petroleum refineries with a daily capacity of 3 million barrels and almost 2,000 gas stations over the U.S. Canada, U.K., Aruba, and Ireland under the names Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar, Beacon, and Texaco.

Valero is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol VLO, is part of the S&P 500, has 10,222 employees, and had $125.987 billion in revenue in 2011.

Thomas Edison had many business interests and several electricity-related companies before 1889. In 1889 Drexel, Morgan & Co, a company formed by J.P. Morgan and Anthony Drexel, helped to merge those companies into Edison General Electric Company.

At the same time, Thomson-Houston Electric Company was growing and acquiring assets.

General Electric (GE) was formed by the merger of Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company.

In 1896 GE was one of the original 12 companies listed on the newly formed Dow Jones Industrial Average. Today it is one of the only original companies still listed, though it has not been listed continuously.

Phillips 66 Corporate Office

Phillips 66 is a holding company that produces natural gas liquids and petrochemicals.

The company was founded in 1917 as Phillips Petroleum Company by L.E. Phillips and Frank Phillips of Oklahoma.

The first Phillips 66 gas station opened in Wichita, Kansas in 1927.

For the next 40 years, Phillips 66 expanded to have gas stations throughout the  United States as well as in Canada.

In 1967 the company became only the second oil company, after Texaco, to sell and market gasoline in all 50 states.

In 2002 Phillips 66 merged with Conoco to form the new company ConocoPhillips.

In 2012 Phillips 66 was spun off from ConocoPhillips. The company began trading on the New York Stock exchange on May 1, 2012.

BP Corporate Office

BP is a British oil and gas company with worldwide headquarters in London, England.

The company has its origins in the 1909 founding of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, which was established as a subsidiary of Burmah Oil Company to exploit oil that was discovered in Iran. 

The Anglo-Persian Oil Company’s name was changed in 1935 to Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, and then to British Petroleum in 1954.

It was owned by the British Government until 1979, when the company began to privatize in stages. The privatization was completed in 1987.

Today BP is one of the six oil and gas supermajors, and the sixth largest oil and gas company in the world.

BP operates in all parts of the oil and gas industry as a vertically integrated company, including exploration, production, refining, distribution, marketing, power generation, petrochemicals, and trading.

BP’s primary listing is on the London Stock Exchange but the company also trades in New York and Frankfurt.

Exxon Mobil Corporate Office

John D. Rockefeller founded the Standard Oil Company in 1870.

In 1911, the Supreme Court ruled that Standard Oil had to be split into 34 oil companies amid a public outcry that the government take action against the company for monopolizing the market.

Two of those companies were Jersey Standard (Standard Oil Company of New Jersey), which eventually became Exxon, and Socony (Standard Oil Company of New York), which eventually became Mobil.

Over the next few decades, Jersey Standard became the largest oil producer in the world. At the same time, Socony acquired companies and stakes in other companies. The company started to produce chemicals as well as produce and refine oil.

Meanwhile, Jersey Standard changed its name to Exxon and Socony changed its name to Mobil.

The two companies first worked together in a joint venture in Indonesia.

In 1998 Exxon and Mobil signed a $73.3 billion dollar agreement to merge and form a new company, Exxon Mobil Corporation.

ExxonMobil is the largest of the world’s supermajors and is responsible for 3% of the total worldwide oil output at 3.921 million barrels per day.

Today ExxonMobil is the third largest company in the world and is ranked #5 on the Forbes list of the World’s Most Valuable Brands . ExxonMobil has 76,900 employees and had $453.123 billion in revenue in 2012.
