After spending more than an hour searching for an open ballet class, Payal Kadakia, a Warner Music corporate employee, decided that she would quit corporate life and start her own business. ClassPass was founded in 2013.

Similar to Groupon, ClassPass provides access to dozens of fitness classes, everything from aerobics to Zumba, using a flat monthly rate of $99 per month. Clients sign up for classes in advance. There is a $20 fee for missing classes.

In March 2018, ClassPass added live-stream fitness classes for $15 per month. Later that year, ClassPass added service to Thailand.

Equinox Fitness was founded in 1991 by the Errico family. In 2008, the company brought Pure Yoga from Hong Kong to the US. Pure Yoga operates separately from Equinox Fitness. Other subsidiaries include Equinox Fitness, Soul Cycle, Pure Yoga, Blink Fitness, and the Yorkville Club.

Equinox operates as a subsidiary of Related Companies, the largest real estate development and property management company in the US. Equinox is an upscale gym with 36 locations.

In 2016, the company announced that it was constructing 2 luxury hotels in New York and in Los Angeles. In August 2016, the billionaire owner of Equinox, Stephen Ross, hosted a fundraiser for Donald Trump, which caused many to cancel their membership.

In March 2022, Equinox had two lawsuits filed against them for unpaid rent.

Town Sports International Gym Corporate Office

Town Sports International Gym was founded in 1973 by squash enthusiast Harry Saint. He began with St. John Squash Racket, a public squash playing club that was unique at a time when most squash players belonged to exclusive clubs. Saint opened two more squash locations, including Town Squash.

By the late 70s, Saint realized that his squash clubs were not appealing to the general public but newly introduced machines like Nautilus and stair climbing were becoming popular. He took advantage of this and began adding these machines while introducing monthly memberships, as opposed to yearly membership fees.

Today, Town Sports International is a premier fitness and sports club, creating a sound business model that has provided strong profits and allowed the company to build new clubs and acquire many underperforming mom-and-pop operations.

Its brands include New York Sports Clubs, Boston Sports Clubs, Philadelphia Sports Clubs, Washington Sports Clubs, Lucille Roberts, TMPL Gym and Total Woman Gym and Spa. The company went public on the NASDAQ in 2006.

There are currently 155 locations in New York, Connecticut, Boston, Rhode Island, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington, D.C., California, and Switzerland, with the majority of these being located in New York.

In August 2019, Town Sports invited SoulCycle and Equinox members to work out for free at their locations after Soul Cycle members called for a boycott when it was discovered that the chairman of Soul Cycle/Equinox was hosting a fundraiser for Donald Trump’s reelection.

SoulCycle Corporate Office

Ruth Zukerman began teaching spin classes in 1996. She introduced her friends, Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice, to the classes and to one another. This trio of friends decided to open their own gym featuring nothing but spin classes. Pooling their cash, their first gym was on the Upper Westside of Manhattan, New York.

Villency Design Group designed the SoulCycle stationary bicycle using a “split seat” to relieve the discomfort caused by conventional bike seats. Equinox Fitness, a competing cycling gym, acquired a majority stake in the company in 2011.

Zukerman left the company in 2009, with Rice and Cutler selling their shares to Equinox in 2016 and stepping down from the company. The company has plans to go public but these plans appear to be stalled as of this time.

SoulCycle has more than 100 locations in 15 US states, Canada, and plans to open a new location in London in 2019. The company also launched its own channel on Sirius XM and Pandora, playing the music they use during the various spin classes.

In August 2019, Related Companies, owner of Equinox and SoulCycle, hosted a fundraiser for Donald Trump’s reelection, leaving many cyclists outraged and calling for a boycott. In response, the company immediately made a plan for “free rides” to raise money for the charity of the instructor’s choice. Numerous other cycling gyms and gyms offering cycling classes, such as Hollywood Fitness Studios and Town Sports International Gym, offered free classes and discount memberships for those who want to boycott SoulCycle and Equinox.

To turn things around, the company put a new CEO in place in December 2020.

Club Pilates Franchise was founded in 2007 in San Diego, California. The company franchises hundreds of Pilates studios worldwide, and offers a 500-hour Pilates teacher training program for club owners.

The company plans to open another 932 studios across America in 2018. At this time, Club Pilates has more than 590 locations. The company has more than 1,000 instructors teaching over seven million workouts each year and is the first studio to create a 500-hour Teacher Training Program designed to thoroughly and safely teach group Pilates apparatus classes.
