Guittard Chocolate Company was founded in 1868 in the San Francisco area of California by French immigrant Étienne Guittard. During the peak of the gold rush years, Guittard traded chocolates he had brought from France for supplies he needed for gold mining. After 3 years and no gold, Guittard decided to open his own shop, where he made chocolate candies and sold a variety of other items.
Today, the company is the only California-based operation that makes French chocolates from old-time recipes. It is still family-owned and operated. Guittard’s not only sells to consumers, but also wholesale to famous chocolate makers such as See’s, Baskin Robbins, and Kellogg’s.
In October 2023, the company announced that it would now offer dairy-free baking chips.

Hello!
I have been a big fan of your Baker’s Chocolate as I have found it to work for me when I have a headache! Even one of my doctors told me he had heard of that working! But………….I had a horrible reaction after eating them on some ice cream! It says on your packaging that it has vanilla in them, not vanillin in them and I have a problem with phenols and I had a huge canker sore in my mouth and was up all night with horrible drainage in my throat from eating them! You are not telling people the truth was to what is in these chips! I have allergies, asthma and fibromyalgia all of which are common disorders, and phenols are all dangerous to people who have these disorders. This is VERY WRONG and could cause someone to lose their life! You need to either list it on your bag and be transparent or risk being reported to the FDA for your lack of transparency! There is definitely got vanillin in it because I have no problem with your Baker’s Chocolate and have been eating it with sugar on it for years!
