Guittard Chocolate Company was founded in 1868 in the San Francisco area of California by French immigrant Étienne Guittard. During the peak of the gold rush years, Guittard traded chocolates he had brought from France for supplies he needed for gold mining. After 3 years and no gold, Guittard decided to open his own shop, where he made chocolate candies and sold a variety of other items.
Today, the company is the only California based operation which makes French chocolates from old time recipes. It is still family owned and operated. Guittard’s not only sells to consumers, but also wholesale to famous chocolate makers such as See’s, Baskin Robbins, and Kelloggs.
Guittard Chocolate Company has headquarters in Burlingame, California, and employs approximately 240 full time employees.
