Shoppers Food Warehouse Corporate Office

Shoppers Food Warehouse was founded in 1929 when the Herman brothers opened their own supermarket, called Jumbo Food Store in Washington, D.C. The company continued to grow and add locations until they opened their first store in Virginia, which they named Shoppers Food Warehouse.

Today, the company has more than 55 locations and continues to grow and expand. Most locations average about 55,000 square feet and offer a variety of products and services, including produce, baked goods, meats and seafood, salad bars, cookware, and prepared foods, among other items. The regional chain boasts more than 30,000 everyday low prices with no loyalty card needed. Shoppers is one of the largest supermarket operators in the Washington, DC, metro area, right behind Giant Food Stores.

The company announced in August 2020 that competitor Lidl would acquire 6 of Shoppers locations in Virginia and Maryland.

As of 1999, the company operates a subsidiary of SuperValu, Inc. Company headquarters are located in Bowie, Maryland.

Family Fare Corporate Office

Family Fare was founded in 1966 in Hudsonville, Michigan. The company operates a small chain of grocery stores in Michigan and 4 other states. As of 1990, the company operates as a subsidiary of SpartanNash.

In 2004, SpartanNash began to consolidate stores under two names, Family Fare and Glen’s Markets. Family Fare began expanding their brand via the acquisition of other stores, including Great Day Markets, Prevo’s Markets, and D&W Fresh Markets. Even some Glen’s Markets were later rebranded to the Family Fare name.

Hugo’s Family Marketplace Corporate Office

Hugo’s Family Marketplace was founded in 1939 in downtown Grand Forks, North Dakota. The company’s original name was Pure Foods Market, but was later changed to Hugo’s, after its founder Hugo Magnuson, who later became Mayor of Grand Forks.

Today, the company operates a small chain of  12 supermarkets in the states of Minnesota and North Dakota. The company recently opened 5 Hugo’s Wine and Spirit stores around the Grand Forks area. Hugo passed away in 2003, just a few days short of his 103rd birthday. He worked at the store the weekend before he passed.

The company is still owned and operated by the Magnuson family. The current CEO is granddaughter Kristie Magnuson Nelson.

In November 2022, Hugo’s acquired local grocery Palubicki’s Family Market for an undisclosed amount.

Both Palubicki’s markets will be rebranded to Hugo’s Family Markets but nothing else will change, according to a spokesperson for Hugo’s.

Hugo’s Family Marketplace has plans on expanding into other states, but details have yet to be released. Headquarters are located on Washington Street, in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Food Bazaar, founded in 1988, owns and operates a chain of supermarkets in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Founder Frances An, Korean born, but who lived for many years in Argentina, discovered when he moved to New York that many grocery items he was accustomed to buying were not available or were very difficult to find. He opened his own store in Queens, New York, with the idea that a wide variety of foods should be available to everyone.

The company offers imported food items from around the world to help people make authentic food dishes. The stores also carry natural and organic food items in addition to the usual meat, milk, and bread. As of 2016, the company had 25 locations in the tri-state area.  Food Bazaar regularly partners with numerous non-profit organizations by providing substantial food donations and hosting many community events year-round.

Food Bazaar is still owned and operated by the An family and has headquarters in Brooklyn, New York.
