H.E. Butt Grocery Corporation is commonly known as H-E-B Grocery Stores. H-E-B Grocery Stores is a privately held supermarket chain with more than 350 stores in Texas and northern Mexico.

Florence Butt founded the company in 1905 when he opened the C.C. Butt Grocery Store in Kerrville, Texas.

In 1919 Howard Edward Butt, Florence’s youngest son, took over the store when he returned from World War I. In 1927 he expanded to Del Rio, Texas, before purchasing three more stores in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. His initials became the name of the store.

Charles Butt, the younger son of Howard, became president of the grocery store chain in 1971. He grew the business from $250 in annual sales in 1971 to $13 billion in 2006.

In 2011,  H.E. Butt Grocery Stores was #12 on the Forbes list of largest privately held companies.

The company hit $1 billion in sales in Mexico in 2012.

The company stopped allowing open carry in their Texas locations in 2015. Concealed carry, with a permit, is still allowed.

Today H-E-B has more than 100,000 employees and had over $21 billion in revenue in 2018, along with 240 locations.

In August 2021, H-E-B announced that it was expanding its footprint in the Dallas area with 5 new stores.

Pepsi Co Corporate Office

The recipe for the soft drink Pepsi was developed in the 1880s by Caleb Bradham. He created the Pepsi-Cola Company in 1902 and registered for the recipe patent in 1903.  The company went bankrupt in 1931 and was bought by Charles Guth.

Charles Guth was the president of Loft, Incorporated, a leading candy manufacturer with a large chain of restaurants and candy shops. He used Loft’s chemists to reformulate the syrup and contracted to stock soda in the restaurants, which were known for their soda fountains.

In 1935 Loft’s shareholders sued Guth for his 91% stake in the company. Loft won the lawsuit and as a result the company formally absorbed Pepsi in 1941 and it was rebranded by Pepsi Cola Company.

In the 1960s Pepsi’s line of products expanded with the creation of Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew.

In 1965 the Pepsi Cola Company merged with Frito-Lay and became PepsiCo, Inc.

From the 1970s through the 1990s PepsiCo expanded by acquiring new brands outside of its core business of packaged food and beverages. It later sold these brands to refocus on the core business. Examples of these brands are Pizza Hut, KFC, California Pizza Kitchen, and Wilson Sporting Goods.

These large divestments were followed by acquisitions, notably of Tropicana Products in 1998. PepsiCo merged with Quaker Oats Company in 2001, which added the Gatorade sports drink line

In 2010 the company completed a $7 billion acquisition of its two largest bottlers in North America.

Today PepsiCo has 22 product lines that generate retail sales of $1 billion each. By net revenue, PepsiCo is the largest food and beverage business in the United States and the second largest in the world. PepsiCo has 300,000 employees worldwide, is part of the S&P 500, and had $65 billion in revenue in 2012.

In September 2022, Pepsico stopped production of all products in Russia due to the ongoing war with Ukraine.

While Pepsico stock is currently running strong, insiders at the company sold $11 million worth of stock, indicating they expect the stock to weaken in the future. 

Pepsi headquarters are located in Purchase, New York.

WinCo Foods is a supermarket chain that was founded in Boise, Idaho by Ralph Ward and Bud Williams. The company was originally named Waremart.

In 1995 the company allowed its employees to purchase company stock through an employee stock ownership plan. Waremart employees have thus had a controlling interest in the company.

By 1991, Waremart was operating 16 stores throughout Idaho, California, and Oregon and had an annual revenue of $300 million.

In 1999 Waremart changed its name to WinCo, which stands for WINning COmpany.

In 2009 the company expanded to Washington, in 2009 to Utah, and in 2011 to Nevada and Arizona.

Today Winco has 89 stores, 14,200 employees and had $4.73 billion in revenue in 2011.

In 2006 the cmpany acquired more than 2,000 stores when it bought Albertson’s Inc for $9.7 billion.

Today SuperValu is the third-largest food retailing company in the United States and ranks number 75 on the Fortune 500 list for 2012.

Vasilios and Aphrodite Haseotes bought a one-cow dairy farm in Cumberland, Rhode Island in 1939.

They opened a dairy store in Bellingham, Massachusetts in 1958 and their first convenience store in 1962. This was the first ever convenience store in the Northeastern United States.

In 1986 Cumberland Farms bought all of Gulf Oil’s gas stations as well as the rights to the trademark in the Northeast.

Today, Cumberland Farms is #37 on the Forbes list of America’s Largest Private Companies, has over 6,000 employees, has 600 stores and gas stations in 11 states, mostly in the Northeast and Florida, and had $8.02 billion in revenue in 2011.
