Mission Foods Corporate Office

Mission Foods was founded in 1977 as a subsidiary of the Gruma Corporation as a means of selling tortillas and tortilla products the company makes. Headquarters are located in Irving, Texas.

The company is the world’s largest producer of tortillas, flat bread, and corn flour products in the world. Company factories are located in North and Central America, Australia, Asia, and Europe. The Australian factory was opened in 2009 and it sponsors The Western Bulldogs, an Australian Rules Football club.

In mid-August 2020, the company announced that it was building a new food plant in Plainfield, Indiana, which would employ up to 544 workers. 

At the end of July 2020, two workers at the Commerce, California, processing facility died from COVID-19. The plant was temporarily shut down after 40 other workers tested positive.  

Mission Foods makes a variety of tortilla and corn flour products, including corn and flour tortillas, tortilla chips, and whole wheat products. All foods made by the company are considered to be kosher.

The company is perhaps best known for its employees, who are encouraged to be fun and “unique”. This makes each visit and each location, different from the others. Cofounder Pam Felix published a monthly newsletter, both online and in print, entitled Taco Talk. Felix retired the publication in 2015.

California Tortilla offers the typical burritos, tostadas, and tacos. The company offers numerous promotions to make themselves stand out from the crowd, including Monday Night Mystery Prize, where patrons who order a burrito get to spin a wheel and win a prize, such as a free cookie or $1 off coupon.

Today, Simmons Foods is one of the largest providers of poultry and pet foods in the US. The company provides ingredients for both canned and dry pet foods, as well as selling their own brand of pet food. The company also raises and sells poultry products, including chicken and turkey for the food service industry.

Simmons Foods is still family owned and operated, with headquarters now located in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Production facilities are located in Siloam Springs, Decatur, Van Buren, and Fort Smith, Arkansas; Fairland, Oklahoma; Emporia, Kansas; Southwest City and Pineville, Missouri; Pennsauken, New Jersey; and Toronto, Canada.

Banana Bay Restaurant was founded in 2001 in Rowland Heights, California. The company operates a Thai food and beverage restaurant.

The company recently expanded by opening a second location in Temple City, California. Traditional Thai cuisine, such as Crying Tiger Steaks, and drinks are served. Desserts are also traditional, including Khanom Chan, which is a steamed coconut “cake”, with 9 layers of coconut and honey.

Banana Bay Restaurant features live music every weekend, as well as call ahead, take out orders. The company is perhaps best known for its Happy Hour, which features all drinks at half price.

Cafe Rio was founded in 1997 in St. George, Utah, by Steve and Tricia Stanley. The company operates a chain of Mexican inspired food.

In 2004, the company was purchased by a group of individuals and Apax Partners. In  2004, the company had 6 locations. Today, Cafe Rio has more than 120 locations in 12 states. Each location offers new recipes inspired by food from Southern Texas and Mexico. Food is made at each location from scratch, with red chili’s imported from Mexico and green chilies from Hatch, New Mexico.

Cafe Rio has won nearly a dozen awards, including the Best of City Search in 2005, 2006, and 2007, as well as winning Best Burrito award from City Weekly in 2004, 2005, and 2007.

Despite the pandemic and subsequent quarantine of 2020, Cafe Rio continues to open new locations, including a second location in Gilbert, Arizona, in July 2021.
