First Solar was founded in 1984 by inventor and entrepreneur Harold McMaster as Glasstech Solar. The aim of the new company was to manufacture low-cost solar panels. Glasstech Solar was succeeded by Solar Cells Inc. in 1990 and the Florida Corporation in 1993.
In 1999 McMaster sold the company to an investment arm of the Walton family named True North Partners, which changed its name to First Solar.
First Solar began producing commercial solar panels in 2002.
The company’s solar panels convert sunlight into electricity using a thin-film semiconductor process that produces more electricity than conventional solar panels.
