PPL, formerly known as PP&L or Pennsylvania Power and Light, was created in 1920 through the merger of eight Pennsylvania utilities.

Until the 1990’s the company focused its activities in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. The industry was deregulated in the 1990’s and PPL began to expand to other states.

Today PPL’s subsidiaries include PPL Electric Utilities, PPL Energy Plus, PPL Generation, Louisville Gas and Electric (LG&E), Kentucky Utilities (KU Energy), PPL Global, and Western Power Distribution.

PPL distributes electricity to 10.5 million customers, has 19,000 MW of generating capacity, and sells energy wholesale in the U.S.

PPL trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol PPL, is a member of the S&P 500, is #300 in the Fortune 500, has over 18,100 employees, had $10.05 billion in revenue in 2013.

DTE Energy Corporate Office

DTE Energy has its roots in the North American Edison Company, which was a member of the original Dow Jones Industrial Average in 1896.

In 1946 the company was broken up by the Securities and Exchange Commission following the Supreme Court decision in 1946.

Detroit Edison then became an independent company, which was traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) using the ticker symbol DTE.

In 1996 the new holding company DTE Energy was formed, which took over the trading ticker symbol DTE. The company changed the name of now-subsidiary Detroit Edison to DTE Electric at that time.

Today DTE Energy distributes electricity to 2.1 million customers through its main subsidiary, DTE Electric, distributes natural gas to 1.2 million customers through DTE Gas, has power plants that generate 11,080 MW, and also offers energy marketing and trading,  energy management services, and independent and on-site power generation.

Entergy’s founder Harvey Couch had a dream to create an integrated electric system.

In 1913 he decided to use sawdust from H.H. Foster’s lumber company as fuel to generate electricity for his power company.

In 1914 Arkansas Light and Power Company began operations with 550-kilowatt generators.

The company grew rapidly, expanding to other states such as Mississippi in 1923 and Louisiana in 1925, as well as expanding within the states.

Entergy is also one of the largest nuclear power generators in the United States.

Entergy Mobile Phone App  CEO Charles Rice stepped down from his position in August 2018 after numerous complaints about the company and fraud charges were made regarding the construction of a new power plant.
