D&W Fresh Market was founded in 1943 in Grandville, Michigan. Originally named IGA, the founders, Roy Woodrick and Sid DeVries, decided to change the name using the initials of their last names in the early 1960’s.
Today, D&W Fresh Market is a subsidiary of SpartanNash Company, after being acquired in 20036. Currently, there are 11 stores which bear the D&W Fresh Market label, with sister stores owned by SpartanNash under the names Family Fare Quick Stop, VG’s Quick Stop, and Forest Hills Quick Stop.
D&W Central Kitchen was also retained by SpartanNash, however, the catering side of the business, Fresh Thyme, was sold to a local catering company in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

LOVED the D&W pot pie for years…Trying to find out who is in charge of QC of things like the chicken pot pie. Used to buy it often, and even had relatives come from out of town to buy it, but the quality, taste and ingredients have changed so that it is no longer good, and, in fact, has deteriorated so much that we will not buying it anymore, as it is almost inedible. The crust is tough and tasteless, the meat is almost not present, and all ingredients are chopped so fine that one cannot recognize what they are. The gravy is almost bitter-not at all tasty or savory. What was a great product has become very ordinary at best, and almost inedible today. Just awful. I spoke with the deli clerk several months ago, when the crust became “yucky” and was told they could not improve this, as the changes come “from corporate”. Perhaps someone in “corporate” should sample what has happened to a previous TREAT.

I was just trying to order your homemade turkey gravy for Thanksgiving & was told you are offering only chicken gravy this year. Who’s bright idea was this?! We have, as have many people since it usually sells out, been loving your gravy for years. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Please fix this & don’t try to pass off that warmed up canned gravy either! Or fire the vegetarian who can’t tell the difference.

Hopefully, this is going to corporate for D&W. On 8-20-17 my husband, grand daughter, and myself went to the store at 1116 Robbins Rd. Grand Haven. We drive about 12-15 miles one way because we enjoy shopping here and like the Boar’s Head meat at the deli among many other things. However, maybe we won’t be making this drive anymore, but rather go to a closer store after today.
We were in the soda pop aisle and saw various sales. The Vernor’s was marked with 3/$9 for a 6 pk, and “must buy 3”, so we decided to buy some, but wanted A&W and Squirt as well. We asked a young man who was working there if all Vernor’s company products were included. He said even though the tag was not in front of all of them, all pepsi products were included. After I paid, however, only the vernor’s was on sale. We were sent to customer service where I spoke with Melissa.
She looked it up in the flyer and could only find coke products on sale. Even though I suggested it was in the previous ad because it said it expired on August 25th, she was focused on the present ad. She called over Beth to go look and see what the sign said. When Beth returned, she said it was 3/$12. I insisted that was wrong and she said, “Want me to show you?” of which I said yes. She lead me to an endcap with 12 pk cans. I told her I didn’t buy cans, but rather bottles. She then told me that I had told her cans. My receipt obviously didn’t say anything about cans and did say 6 pk. It made me upset that she basically called me a liar, so I told her to follow me and we went to the pop aisle where I showed her the 3/$9 tag which she pulled off. She said the man who told us about the pop all being on sale didn’t know what he was talking about and proceeded to tell me I didn’t need to take my frustration out on her. But saying I told her something different and then telling me their employees don’t know what they are talking about, certainly didn’t calm my frustration any.
In the end, I returned the Root Beer and Squirt (yes, only $2.48 total because I was very frustrated with them and the way they were treating me). Then while getting the refund, I had to tell them how much I should get because they kept trying to add in the Vernor’s bottle deposit, because “if they were 3 for something it would be 3”. I told them to take the $4.49 plus 60 cents times two and just give it to me because I had already wasted over 10-15 minutes at least trying to solve this. Then on top of everything, I had to ask for a copy of the refund because they weren’t giving me one, and Beth snapped that she was getting a copy.
So, over $2.48 we just may not come back. It is a shame that store doesn’t know what they are doing (even stated by Beth about the young man), doesn’t know how to return something properly (wrong amount) and lacks proper customer service protocal. They were determined that I was wrong and that was that. I left feeling very angry over a simple thing. One thing I can’t tolerate is being accused of something and dealing with people are inconsiderate.
