Craig Newmark moved to San Francisco in 1995. He decided to start an email distribution to friends about events in the area.

There was no moderation to the list and Newmark noticed quickly that people were using it to get technical positions filled and other non-event postings.

Community members began asking for a web interface and Newmark registered www.craigslist.org. The website went live in 1996. The website is a classified advertisement website with sections for jobs, housing, personals, for sale, items wanted, services, community, gigs, resumes, and discussion forums.

In 1999 Craigslist incorporated as a for-profit company and Newmark quit his job as a software engineer to run Craigslist full time.

Craigslist office

Craigslist was and continues to be, focused on community and giving people a voice. The site has had only minor changes in design since 1996 and continues to be simple. The site has no advertisements and no banner ads.

Craigslist’s main source of revenue is paid jobs in select cities (from $25 to $75) and paid broker apartment listings in New York City ($25).

Miranda and Elyette Barbour, dubbed “The Craigslist Killers,” were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Troy LaFerrara, whom they lured with an ad on CraigsList offering female companionship.

The company is very secretive about financial details and ownership. It is believed that founder Craig Newmark owns the controlling share, current CEO Jim Buckmaster is a part owner, and 25% is owned by eBay.

Craigslist website In March 2018, the company removed its section titled “Personals” after Congress passed a sex trafficking law which would have left Craigslist responsible if criminals used their site for trafficking sex workers.

Today Craigslist operates websites in 700 cities in 70 countries. The company is estimated to have a net worth of $2 billion and had an approximate revenue of $694 million in 2016.

Your customer service dept seems to be non-existent. I have been sending e-mails to you off and on for over a year now. I’ve been using Craigslist for years and I been dogged every step of the way. I get harassing emails, every one of my posts gets flagged because I’m forced to post outside of my own area because you haven’t answered many requested for us to have our own listed location, your user policies need to be better managed and clearly posted and the list goes on and on.

This is totally unprofessional, but I’m sure the powers that be probably don’t give a rip since they are making their big pay checks from paid ads.

I will be filing a complaint with the BBB as this is not acceptable.

    PLEASE HELP!!!

When searching Appliance City, none of our posts show.
Instead, other companies Keyword Stuffing are showing up. This never used to happen.
We have been happy using Craigslist for years now, and have seen enough benefit to continue with Paid Postings.
Currently spending $400-$600/month, we need to get this ironed out asap!
Our revenue from CL and Click Thru to our website has taken a dip (we’re not using site link).

Thank you for your attention to this matter!

I recently posted to Craigslist Denver after many years of not using it.
    WOW,
    What a horrible disappointment.
I posted a free pool, linked a webpage to the manufacturer of the pool, luckily got several hits before some bot decided that I was a scammer. The Craigslist help page is something a lawyer couldn’t figure out. It’s filled with obfuscating information and ridiculous and misleading facts.
When I finally was able to get to the heart of the matter I find that Craigslist removed my ad for a “recall” on the product. NOT a recall on the pool itself but a recall on a ladder that the pool company had made. NOT a ladder that was sold with the pool that I own, but a ladder that was sold with larger pools that I don’t own.

So, Craigslist flagged my ad for an item that WASNT recalled, for a pool I’m NOT currently giving away (my pool ladder WASN’T the one that was recalled) because the company that made the pool once had a recall on one of their ladders. That’s how bad Craigslist has become.

If you have ANY possibility of NOT using Craigslist………PLEASE… Go to Ebay, they’re less inclined to be beyond stupid when it comes to knowing their own facts. They also have far better ways of contacting them to let them know if there’s a problem. And apparently according to every thing I read online Craigslist really doesn’t care, apparently bad publicity has little effect on them.

HEY CRAIGSLIST…. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!!! HERE’S THE RECALL AND MY POOL ISN’T LISTED!!!

I don’t think it’s fair that you discriminate against men who posted adds in the personal section under casual encounters why do men have to varify when it’s there add the women are responding to if 2 consenting adults 1posted the add and happens to be male; And the other is female both deserve the same treatment. In my case And people like me who don’t have any credit cards or debit cards the woman what me to verify and I can’t so I don’t think anyone who puts the add in should have to varify If anyone should have to varify it should be the one responding to the add so you eather need to get rid of your varification process or allow the men who posted the add to retrieve information without having to varify isn’t that why we put age down on our post

I have used Craigslist for yrs to advertise for employees for my bakery business. I have never had issues until my most recent ad, which was flagged for removal… and again, flagged for removal… & so on. My business utilizes entry-level employees, so my ads do not attract high calibre applicants. It is bad enough that many of these folks enjoy the sheer self-importance of continuously flagging multiple ads, but this “flagging” concept has also created an army of ogre-like overlords who have taken it upon themselves to chastise employers for what they subjectively deem to be “violations” of Craigslist rules. They are rude & impertinent. This process does not work! I would suggest that corporate shut down the “flagging” feature and devise a vetting process to ensure some level of professionalism by site monitors. Here is the text of my (horrible) ad that started the onslaught… the same ad I have run for yrs… one to which I always follow-up with exacting details about the job opening:

“Bagel co. seeks RESPONSIBLE, RELIABLE person for P/T doughmaker position; mostly am hours. Must have HS diploma or more. Position starts @ $9.00/hr. Send resume &/or contact information. You will be contacted for an interview.”

I would be more than happy to share with you the back & forth exchanges that occurred between the trolls & myself.

Once that happened she decide to start harassing me saying that i stole money from her when she sent that much.

Austin Tx. craigslist has been taken over by bottom feeders. The jewelry ads are all one buyer or full of 3 pawnshops. Taking up all the bandwidth so no ones single ad can be seen.
In the Wanted category, phones and junk cars have taken over, again no bandwidth for a single ad to be seen.
I don’t think this is what Craig had in mind to happen to his wonderful craigslist sites. Love the site but totally useless anymore.

    Dear sir or Madam:

You are currently letting a known scam company interact with Craigslist.
    In South Jersey write/ed/tr8 see:

May 7 RIP OFF REPORT, RESUME SERVICE IN CHERRY HILL map

Google: rip of report scam and see what comes up.

Basically, RipoffReport.com is used to EXTORT money from people unethically. When someone posts a complaint, it can never be removed, even if the poster requests or demands it. Instead, they are referred to an arbitration program that costs approximately $2,000. That is pure extortion. There is no logical reason to ask a poster to pay thousands of dollars just to remove his own post on a website. Legitimate sites allow the poster to remove their own posts, or will gladly remove it per their request.

Legitimate businesses also receive phone calls offering to remove the “complaint” for a fee. In some cases even if the fee is paid the imaginary complaint is not removed.
There are currently several lawsuits pending against them.

PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LET ANYONE ASSOCIATED WITH RIP OFF REPORT TO APPEAR ON CRAIGSLIST.
