Old Dominion Freight Line was founded by Earl and Lillian Congdon when they started running a single truck between Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia.

The company first expanded to North Carolina and South Virginia. When the trucking industry was deregulated in the 1980’s Old Dominion Freight Line expanded into Florida, Tennessee, and California, as well as Chicago and Dallas.

Today the company operates a fleet of 25,000 trailers and 6,200 tractors from 220 service centers all over the United States. Less-than-truckload (LTL), which is freight from different shippers in one truckload, accounts for most of the company’s business. Old Dominion also offers logistics services including supply chain consulting and warehousing.

In March 2023, Old Dominion reported certain less-than-truckload (“LTL”) operating metrics for February 2023. Revenue per day decreased by 2.9% as compared to February 2022 due to a 12.4% decrease in LTL tons per day. 

In February 2023, The Motley Fool stated that a bull market was on the way and that buying stock in Old Dominion would be a prudent move.

Henry Theobald founded the Toledo Computing Scale and Cash Register Company to make and market the automatic computing pendulum scale invented by Allen DeVilbiss.

In 1945 Dr. Erhard  Mettler started a precision mechanics company in Switzerland. In 1980 he sold the business to Ciba-Geigy AG.
