Wakefield’s Corporate Office

Wakefield’s was founded in 1917 by James Wakefield. The company began by offering women’s clothing and accessories until James son, Martin, decided to expand the small store and add men’s and children’s shoes and clothing.

Today, the company has 10 locations in and around the greater Anniston, Alabama, area. The original Wakefield’s store remains and the remaining 9 locations are known as either Martin’s or Martin’s Family Clothing. Martin passed away in 2010.

Wakefield’s and Martin’s are still owned and operated by the Wakefield family, with the grandson of James, William, now acting as CEO. Company headquarters remain in Anniston, Alabama.

Boyds Philadelphia Corporate Office

Boyds Philadelphia was founded in 1938 by the Gushner brothers, whose father was a Russian immigrant whose corner business sold magazines, newspapers, and men’s dress shirts. His sons opened a small men’s wear store in Center City.

Today, Boyds no longer sells newspapers or cigars, but they do still offer men’s clothing. The company has expanded to include women’s clothing, hand tailored and customized clothing, as well as shoes and accessories, such as wallets, men’s and women’s fragrances, outerwear, and purses. In 2008, the company received the “Store of the Year” award from MR Magazine.

The company is still operated by the Gushner brothers, now the 4th generation to do so. The store and headquarters remain where they have been since 1990, on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. The store is undergoing major remodeling and is a late comer to the world of eCommerce, where they opened their on line site in 2017.

Unclaimed Baggage Center Corporate Office

Doyle Owens was selling insurance when a customer told him that Trailways was selling unclaimed baggage, site unseen. Doyle took $300 and bought every piece of luggage. Renting a house, Owens and his wife was shocked at the items they found in the bags and their value.

The Unclaimed Baggage Center is based on the same idea, only today the company has contracts with most of the airline companies. Bags are purchased at a flat rate. Employees of the company go through every item in every bag. Clothes are dry cleaned on site, other items are cleaned and appraisals are offered for more expensive items. The store has more than 40,000 square feet of space, but the company says it has no plans to sell items on line.

Unclaimed Baggage Center says it stocks at leas 7,000 new items every day. The company is still owned and operated by the Owens family with headquarters being located in Scottsboro, Alabama.

Today, Sterling Jewelers is the second largest jewelry seller in the US, with a 4.2% market share. Sterling is a sister store to J.B. Robinson Jewelers, Kay Jewelers, Jared the Galleria of Jewelry, Belden Jewelery, as well as Marks & Morgan Jewelers, just to name a few. Sterling Jewelers has more than 1500 locations across the US, with most stores being located in malls. In February of 2014, Signet Jewelers acquired Zales Jewelers for $1.4 billion. This makes Signet worth a total of $6.2 billion.

Sterling Jewelers has been a long time sponsor of the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, with approximate figures going towards building of clinics and funding of research to $90 million. Although Signet Jewelers has headquarters in the UK, Sterling has headquarters located in Akron, Ohio.
