Clorox dates back to 1913 when 5 entrepreneurs set up the first liquid bleach factory in the US. The company was originally called the Electro-Alkaline company and its first product was Clorox bleach.
The company floundered as consumers did not know what bleach was. William Murray took over the company in 1916. His wife, Anne, began to hand out free samples. The product was an instant success.
In 1928, the company went public as the Clorox Chemical Company.
In 1957, the company was purchased by Procter & Gamble and renamed to The Clorox Company.
In 1967, after a 10 year court battle, the FTC ordered P&G to divest Clorox. The company was spun off in 1969.
In 1999, the company acquired First Brands, makers of Glad, Handi-Wipes and STP.
Today, the company manufactures several products other than Clorox bleach including Brita water filters, Burt’s Bees, Formula 409 and Pine-Sol.

I sent the following message to Linda Randle, CEO, on November 1st and never got a reply:
Dear Ms. Randle:
I hope you will be able to help me with a few disturbing matters regarding the Pine-Sol recall. After trying to fill out the recall form and encountering a problem that made it impossible to complete and calling the phone number provided and being met with silence, I sent an email message explaining the problems I encountered. The email I received in return was obviously a form reply, stating that the recall site was not yet up when I tried—but it was; it just didn’t work the way it was supposed to (text of email enclosed). I tried to fill out the form on October 31 and got the same result.
Of course, I want my rebate, but that’s a minor concern. The major concern was also raised in the email. I am immune compromised and have been treated for cancer over the past two years, undergoing surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. I am now experiencing extreme shortness of breath and fatigue. My oncologist and pulmonologist have been attributing the problem to the radiation I received. I have an appointment with my pulmonologist in about two weeks and will bring up the fact that I’ve been using a product that contains Pseudomonas aeruginosa so that he can consider the possibility that this bacterium has aggravated my condition. Any details you can provide to help my pulmonologist will be appreciated.
Also of concern is the disposal of the Pine-Sol that I have. The recall website says it’s safe to close the bottle and throw it in the trash, but I worry that, no matter how the waste is handled (landfill, incinerator), the Pseudomonas aeruginosa will escape into the environment. My one bottle won’t have much of an effect—but what about all the bottles other Pine-Sol users are throwing away. I am considering bring the bottle with me next time I have an appointment at the hospital and disposing of it with the medical waste. Do you think this would be a good solution to the problem.
I will appreciate any advice that you can give we on these issues and any help you can give me in obtaining my refund.
Sincerely,
EMAIL FROM PINE-SOL (WHICH INCLUDES MY EMAIL TO PINE-SOL)

I have a 28 oz. bottle of Pine-Sol lemon scent with the UPC code found on the unsafe products. I tried calling the phone number on your product safety alert; it rings–then silence. I tried going to the web page with the recall form; a blank page appears (I tried this with two different browsers). I found this email address and hope whoever receives this message can act to get me the refund and tell me how I can dispose of the contaminated product safely.
The UPC on the bottle is 4129440187.
I no longer remember where or when I bought it or exactly what the price was.
I will not use the product again. It is particularly dangerous to me because I am immune compromised. In fact, I wonder if using it could have caused the shortness of breath I am experiencing, and I will ask my pulmonologist about the possibility when I see him on November 8th.
I understand that the pine scent variety is safe, but I’m not sure I’m comfortable about using it.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Ms. Stein I purchased a Clorox 360 from my vendor. They are telling me that they are unable to get the 360 product to run the machine because your plant has closed. They said they have 30,000 gallons on back order and tried to sell me another product to run through your machine. I believe that will void my warranty. Can you assist me with getting some product. We service schools in New Orleans, La. Thanks for your assistance.

Mr. Knauss,
Re: Clorox “Clean-Up” Spray Bottle
On June 7, the container came apart leaving the spray top in my hand, the plastic bottle on my kitchen floor and fluid under my feet. When attempting to right the bottle fluid caused me to fall breaking my right wrist. I required surgery on June 10 to align the bone with a plate and screws. I am still under the care of a Hand Therapist to regain use of my wrist. I HOPE THAT YOU WILL ORDER THE RE-DESIGN THIS CONTAINER.

Hi Clorox/Liquid Plumbr (sp?)- I don’t appreciate your newest ad showing the woman you hired to pull her pants partially down. I wouldn’t want her, or any of you, around my kids for sure. I think people who expose themselves to strangers and to children are perverts. And now I learn from the other comments that Clorox supports the butchers at Planned Parenthood. I will not be buying from you as long as my memory functions hold out.

I recently purchased a 4 pack of Clorox disinfecting wipes and found the container of wipes to be worthless. I have been buying this product for years for different things around the house and this container of wipes falls all apart before I can even get it out of the container to use. I’ve actually had this to happen a few months back as well. I am very upset because this wipes are already super expensive and now I’m worried the entire 4 pack of 78 wipes per container are the same way. I have pictures of what exactly the wipes are doing but it doesn’t allow me to upload them up here. Every wipe I have taken out of the container has came completely apart and is useless. I will consider buying another brand in the future. I am not happy.

Will not be buying your product anymore since I found out you donate to Planned Parenthood. I called to see if it your company does indeed donate to Planned Parenthood, and after being passed to different employees on the phone, an employee said that your company does not donate any money. After doing more research I did find that your Company gave $4 million and $2,000 of it went to Planned Parenthood. I don’t care if you give them $1.00 you are still supporting something that is killing babies:( Your CEO should go look up pictures of abortions, if that doesn’t affect the companies views then you as a company are indeed heartless. Being such a large company, and having customers from both sides of the issue, even if the company is ok with it, you shouldn’t give your customers proceeds to support it. By doing so you as a company are showing where you stand, history will show you are on the wrong side.

Dear Clorox Company. Your products have always been very satisfactory to my family and I. Recently I purchased a container of bleach from a Kroger store in Columbus Ohio. This container some how leaked from the cap area and turned my black winter coat into a spotted orange sleeve. Upon my inspection of the cap it appeared the bottle had a Cap that was improperly sealed the bottle itself sealer or spacer Was leaking upon my placing the item in the car. I brought this up a few days after my purchase to a Kroger store manager. His only response was that maybe customers had loosened the cap. My suggestion to you would be to seal the bottle with a pull off plastic or polymer cushion seal that requires a good tab to pull off to open . While my coat is not very old it’s the best and warmest I currently have for ohios weather. I can send photos or the coat itself for your Inspection if necessary. The retail cost of the coat is between 140.00 to 200.00 dollars. I do have also the receipt for the recent Clorox purchase. The coat was a Christmas present in December of 2015. While still wearable I would only use it now for farm work around my home. I normally never complain about anything, but that cleaner could burn or cause a serious emergency. I would even appreciate a one sleeve dye job but I’m sure it wouldn’t match or even work. Your response would be greatly appreciated. Regardless of your solution I wouldn’t switch brands as things do occur and it surely was accidental. I would only strongly suggest if possible the change in the type of seal. Thank you very much. Dear Mr. Knauss,
I have used Clorox Clean-up with bleach since it first came out and regular Clorox long before that, always safely. I left a bottle of Clorox Clean-up on my kitchen counter overnight and it leaked and ruined my counter top. I am requesting that your company replace my counter tops. My neighbors who have seen the damage, ( I live in a community of 374 homes ) are re-thinking Clorox products and are waiting to see what kind of response I receive from your company. I can furnish pictures if necessary. I threw out the bottle to avoid further damage.
Thank you very much for your consideration. in Ocala, FL

Dear MS Stein:
After discussing my concept with a major retailer I was advised to contact your company, since you are a major manufacture of toilet bowl cleaning products.
I have discovered a very simple technique that will reduce the necessity to purchase all toilet bowl cleaning products by 65%+. Since Americans spend an average of $6/8 hundred dollars per year I believe that the industry would not want anything to interfere with that flow of revenue.
My immediate and only goals are to sell this concept outright. Please contact me, if you have any interest in obtaining this concept.
