In 1918 American Cellulose & Chemical Manufacturing Company was founded by Camille Dreyfus.
The company was set up to produce cheaper fabric for airplane manufacturing. Manufacturing did not begin until 1924; the first product was cellulose acetate commercial fabric.
In 1927 the company changed its name from American Cellulose to Celanese Corporation of America.
In 2003 private equity company Blackstone Group announced its takeover of Celanese and the acquisition was completed the next year.
Today Celanese Corporation is a global technology and specialty materials company. It manufactures building block chemicals such as acetic acid and vinyl acetate monomers.
Celanese is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CE, is a member of the S&P 500, is #399 in the Fortune 500, has 7,430 employees, and had $6.73 billion in revenue in 2013.
