VitalSource Technologies Corporate Office

VitalSource was founded in 1994 in San Antonio, Texas by Dr. Robert Todd Watkins, Jr.

The company’s first commercial implementations kicked off in 2000 when the small group of dental schools piloted the use of an early course materials solution, DVDs that held full digital versions of each student’s entire four years of textbooks, workbooks, lectures slides, manuals, and handbooks. The digital curriculum was updated each semester and stayed with students after graduation as a professional resource.

In July 2006, the company was acquired by Ingram Content Group. VitalSource now acts as a subsidiary of Ingram Industries.

In June 2021, Ingram Industries sold VitalSource to Francisco Partners, a private equity group, for an undisclosed amount.

In 2019, the company partnered with Barne’s & Noble Education to expand access to and implement BNED’s “FirstDay” Inclusive Access program, which gives students access to course materials by or before the first day of class each term.

In August 2022, VitalSource began carrying Labster’s complete portfolio of science lab simulations.

VitalSource maintains a corporate office in Raleigh, North Carolina.

AbeBooks Corporate Office

AbeBooks was founded in 1995 by Rick and Vivian Pura, and Keith and Cathy Waters. The company operates an eCommerce, online global book marketplace for the buying and selling of books, especially out of print or rare and antique books.

From the late 1990s to 2005, AbeBooks had reseller agreements with eBay, Half.com, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon, allowing AbeBooks to market and sell booksellers’ books through those channels; these agreements were dissolved in 2005. AbeBooks currently has a reseller agreement only with Amazon.com.

In 2008, Amazon acquired AbeBooks for an undisclosed amount.

In November 2018, AbeBooks told booksellers in certain countries that they would no longer support their services due to a change in payment providers. This caused many booksellers to pull more than 3 million titles from their market.

In November 20196, the company shut down a popular listing tool called Fillz.

At this time, AbeBooks still maintains a corporate office in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

ThriftBooks Corporate Office

ThriftBooks was founded in 2003 by Daryl Butcher and Jason Meyer. The company’s main focus is on selling used books, however, it also sells CDs, DVDs, audiotapes, and video games.

The company states that it has sold more than 165 million books since it opened for business.

Since 2004, it has partnered with libraries, which provide unsorted books and get a share of the profits.

The company is popular among book collectors and avid readers since it is one of the few booksellers that is not affiliated with Amazon.

As of January 2022, the company offers free shipping on orders that exceed $15, which is far less than Amazon’s required $25 for free shipping.

In June 2020, due to the coronavirus, many locations that accepted used books were closed. ThriftBooks began creating book drop-off boxes where people could safely leave their donated books.

ThriftBooks opened a 190,000-square-foot (18,000 m2) processing center in Phoenix in 2021 that created 150 new jobs.

In September 2021, the company donated 30,000 books to support Orion Jean’s Race to Kindness Book Drive.

ThriftBooks maintains a corporate office in Tukwila, Washington.

Books Are Magic Corporate Office

Founded by husband and wife team Michael Fusco-Straub and Emma Straub in 2017, Books are Magic is the couple’s third bookstore.

The company specializes in out-of-print or hard-to-find titles, but a wide range of popular novels and non-fiction books are also available.

New author Casey McQuiston has revealed both of her novels at the Brooklyn-based Books are Magic bookstore.

Co-founder and owner Emma Straub says it was a struggle to keep bookstores open and profitable before Covid but found that operating an online bookstore was actually easier than she imagined it would be.

And while New York is lifting the mask mandate in many areas, Books are Magic says that they will still enforce the use of face masks for now.

Books are Magic maintains a corporate office in Brooklyn, New York.

Books and Books Corporate Office

Mitch Kaplan was studying law when he realized that he loved books and was really only interested in reading more books and meeting the authors than practicing the law that was on the books.

Kaplan opened his own bookstore in Coral Gables, Florida, in 1982. At 25 years of age, he knew nothing about running a business, but he says he quickly learned from his on the job training.

Today, Books and Books has 6 locations around Florida. Kaplan is also responsible for founding the Miami International Book Fair.

Most of the locations have an indoor cafe to encourage people to sit and linger over some books, whether they purchase them or not.

The company both founded and sponsors the Miami International Book Faire every November.

Due to the coronavirus, at the end of March 2020, Kaplan states that he had no choice but to close all of the locations until further notice. Books can still be purchased online, however.

The company maintains a corporate office in Coral Gables, Florida.
