Red Bull Energy Drink Corporate Office

Red Bull was founded in Thailand in 1976.  Krating Daeng had been making the drink, which was favored by night workers and truck drivers.

When German citizen Dietrich Mateschitz was visiting Thailand, he found that the drink “cured” his jet lag.

 In 1984, Mateschitz co-founded Red Bull GmbH and turned it into an international brand.

During the 1990s, the drink was exported to many countries, including Germany, the UK, and the United States. The flavoring for Red Bull is still produced in Bangkok and exported around the world.

Over the years, the company has experimented with different flavors and colors, including watermelon, cranberry, and blueberry.

Red Bull owns football teams, with clubs in Austria, Germany, the United States, and Brazil featuring the Red Bull trademark in their names. By associating the drink’s image with these activities, the company seeks to promote a “cool” public image and raise brand power.

Some claim that the drink is dangerous and in one case, a couple who stole more than 45 cases stated that they did so because they were addicted to the drink.

Boston Beer Corporate Office

The Boston Beer Company was founded in 1984 by James Koch and Rhonda Kallman.  Koch was the sixth-generation, first-born son to follow in his family’s brewing footsteps, brewed his first batch of beer in his kitchen.

While serving in his role as a manufacturing consultant at BCG, Koch developed a business plan for a locally focused beer company. He invested $100,000 of his own money and raised additional funds from investors, family members, and friends including former classmates and BCG colleagues.

In 1997, the company acquired the Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewery, which allowed the company to produce its own beer, rather than rely on contract brewing from other businesses.

In April 2008, the Boston Beer Company issued its first recall due to potential defects found in certain 12-fluid-ounce glass bottles manufactured by a third-party supplier which, at the time, supplied about a quarter of the bottles that the company used.

The company went public on the NYSE (under the ticker symbol SAM) in 1995. Like many stocks, SAM has its ups and downs, but The Motley Fool states that the company is still listed as a buy due to strong leadership.

Lipton Corporate Office

Lipton Tea was founded in 1890 by Sir Thomas Lipton of Scotland.

Lipton used his savings to open a small tea shop. Within just a few years, Lipton owned 200 shops around Scotland.

Shortly after opening his shop, Thomas Lipton began traveling the world for new items to sell. One such item was tea, a rare and expensive luxury at the time. Sales had doubled from £40 million in the late 1870s to £80 million by the mid-1880s.

In 1890 Lipton purchased tea gardens in Ceylon, now called Sri Lanka, from where he packaged and sold the first Lipton tea. 

He arranged packaging and shipping at the lowest possible cost and sold his tea in packets by the pound, half-pound, and quarter-pound, along with the advertising slogan: “Direct from the tea gardens to the teapot.”

Lipton teas were an immediate success in the United States.

Lipton was acquired by Unilever in 1972.

In 2011, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) criticized Unilever for conducting and funding experiments on rabbits, pigs, and other animals in an attempt to make human health claims about the tea’s ingredients.

According to the animal rights organization, Unilever decided to end the practice of Lipton products after receiving more than 40,000 appeals from PETA supporters and days before PETA made plans to launch its “Lipton CruelTEA” campaign.

 Unilever no longer tests their products on animals unless required to by governments as part of their regulatory requirements.

Lipton states that tea, especially green and black teas, supports a healthy immune function.

Ready to drink tea in bottles is in high demand in the US and the market is expected to experience tremendous growth over the next few years.

In 1998, the brothers acquired Total Beverage, rebranding those locations as Total Wine.

Total Wine is a privately owned liquor and beer selling company with some of the lowest prices anywhere.

In fact, their low prices were sometimes a problem. Connecticut has state laws that prohibit selling alcohol below state-mandated set pricing. Total Wine was fined $37,500 in 2016 for selling below the state minimum price.

As of January 2022, Total Wine had 229 stores in 27 states. It conducts online sales in 14 states that allow online alcohol sales.

In mid-March 2020, the company announced a $2-per-hour pay raise for its store employees amid the coronavirus pandemic in “recognition of the hard work [they] were doing”; in April, the company ended the pay increase because of “trends in the business and external environment”.

In January 2022, the company donated $20,380 to the Anton Art Center in Maryland.
