Former colleagues Jennifer Rubio and Stephanie Korey, who had worked on the executive team at Warby Parker, founded Away in 2015. The pair wanted to create luggage that was easier, especially for women, that had everything frequent travelers would appreciate, such as USB ports.
The company grew quickly, selling more than $12 million in luggage in 2016, its first full fiscal year. The following year, with more than $50 million in sales, the company had to hire an additional 60 persons to handle the load.
To date, the company has sold more than 300,000 suitcases and is the highest funded, all-female start-up projects. The majority of sales occur online, but the company does have 4 brick and mortar locations in the US, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin. The company recently opened a store in London as the company’s flagship store in the UK.
The carry on bag is the company’s most sought after piece, with celebrities posting photos of their bags on Instagram and the popular app SnapChat.
Online site The Verge posted an interview in December 2019 with Stephanie Korey, where she described her own workplace as being “toxic” and where employees were publically ridiculed on Stack. Korey apologized several times calling her words “simply wrong”, but the outcry was so strong, Korey resigned as CEO in late December 2019.

Hello,
I am writing to suggest you look at designing a small carry-on bag with wheels and trolley sleeve, that will fit with the Bigger Carry-on bag. My husband and I have a full set of Away suitcases and generally love them. I am a travel advisor and avid traveler, and he and I travel the world several times per year.
Some time ago, I purchase two Daily Carry-On Bags. We were looking for a bag that could double as a carry-on briefcase (portable office) and an over night bag. We use the bags regularly but not for what we purchased them for. The Daily Carry On would be great if it had a Trolly Sleeve, to stack on our Bigger Carry On. But without a Trolly Sleeve, I find it awkward to travel with the two bags.
I am about to embark on a work trip and needed bags for carry on, that would stay connected with a Trolly Sleeve, for hopping on and off trains. So I purchased the Everywhere Bag. Once I loaded it up, I found it was too heavy to carry for my kind of travel, I really wanted something with wheels. Because you don’t have what I was looking for, I searched elsewhere and ended up with a TUMI soft sided carry on bag with wheels, that will fit under the seat. This allows me to carry on both the Bigger Carry On and the TUMI bag.
If you are interested, please email me and I will send photos of the stacked Away bags, and a photo of the Away bag with the TUMI bag so you can see what I am suggesting. The TUMI has a trolley pocket that fits snuggly.
I will continue to love my AWAY bag but hope that you will consider designing something in the future to accommodate the business traveler who doesn’t want to carry a duffel or a backpack.
I will be sending back the Everywhere bag but continue to recommend AWAY to everyone. Please let me know when you design a soft sided carry-on with wheels, and I will purchase for my husband!
Thanks for listening.
