Aflac Incorporated was founded by brothers John, Paul, and William Amos in Columbus, Georgia in 1955 as American Family Life Insurance Company of Columbus. The company signed 6,000 policyholders within the first year.
The company pioneered cancer insurance in 1958. This supplemental insurance was designed to cover expenses not covered by traditional insurance, including travel and loss of income.
In 1964 the company decided to focus on sales through the workplace, eventually through policies sponsored by employers and funded through payroll deductions. The same year the company changed its name to American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus (AFLAC).
By 1971 Aflac was operating in 42 states.
In the 1970’s Aflac expanded to Japan.
In the 1980’s the company diversified into television and radio stations.
By the end of the 1990’s Aflac controlled more than $37 billion in assets and total yearly sales topped $8 billion.
Today Aflac is the largest provider of supplemental insurance in the United States. It is the largest life insurer in Japan and insures one in four Japanese households. Aflac has 8,000 employees worldwide and had $22.171 billion in revenue in 2011.

Not only are they deceptive to their policy holders, they also jerk hundreds of college interns around every year.
This company is worst than Snake Oil salesmen. They deceive them into thinking they are going to get a world of experience at their company and that they will be paid. It Turns out they use these kids to cold call to get leads and they don’t get compensated unless they sell a policy. One poor kid bought a policy for her self just so she could get paid.
My daughter did not realize it was a commission job until 3weeks into her internship. She worked for three weeks with no compensation , not to mention the time she wasted taking the the test to be licensed and lost opportunities to work another internship.
Why would anybody recommend this company to anyone, the CEO should be ashamed of this organization and himself Can’t believe it can stay in business the way they operate

I was sent a check made out to “Bonnie K K”. Not able to cash that. Have called, faxed, emailed several times, called with no decent response. My agent and I have been flat-out lied to. Nothing but lies about getting a replacement check.
Social l Media here I come. Only PPL gong to see this is possibly an AFLAC Rep. IF they actually check it.

My wife has sent in all the necessary paperwork, several times, going back to November 2018. My doctors have sent in all the necessary paperwork and Aflac is still giving me the run around . They are asking for a authorization form which I have sent that in as well, ub40 several times. Now, Here we are in October 2019 and they’re still asking for the same garbage.
what the heck seems to be the freaking problem. This is getting bad now I’ve had my power shut off and this Aflac payout should have taken care of that. It seems like nobody there even gives a crap. Sorry for my mouth but we are really pissed off now, never mind having to wait on the phone at any time during the day or the evening for a half hour or more for someone to help us, and keep getting the same jerkoff excuses that we got for the last 10 months.
What seems to be the problem? Is it that you like taking our money and not paying out what you promised in the policy?
because it really seems like that and I can pretty much guarantee you anybody I tell the story to will agree with me….
Policy # 16868, hospital indemnity policy.
I cannot wait for your reply. Hopefully this will not be in vain like the last 10 months we can get this resolved, because this is crap. How can you keep leading people on like this? Stand in my shoes and you’ll call b******* as well.
Try putting these representatives in an office instead of sitting on their asses at home answering the freaking phone, while eating bonbons and playing video games.
The BBB will be hearing from me, and I know you probably don’t care but I’m going to do it anyways if I don’t get any results or even possibly a lawyer like everybody else below me in these complaints have done.
What happened to paying out as quick 24 hours? Apparently it’s not for us, the policyholders, possibly the shareholders? I’ll just bet they get theirs real quick.
I am a manager in a Fortune 500 multibillion-dollar corporation and this is unacceptable.. FIX IT..

Well as I read all of these negative comments, I can just say I’m in the same boat with you folks. Aflac drags their feet and does nothing but give you a run around. Worst experience I have had with a company. I have contacted an attorney and the State attorney, said he’d love to take on this one. He doesn’t like insurance companies. Aflac sucks and I hope my company gets rid of them doing business with us like my HR rep said.
Tarin Brunink says
Alfac Phyllis seems to be robotic. The customer service 10 years ago was a whole lot better that now. Fight Fight Fight for claims to be processed with all the information needed to pay. It is absolutely absurd.
Sherrie Garnett says
I am livid!!
I enrolled in Aflac’s Hospital Indemnity policy after a benefits meeting at my office. At the end of the meeting, I spoke one-on-one with the Rep, and asked very specifically, whether there were any limitations or exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Specifically discussing with him, that I have AFib and Congestive Heart Failure, and have for many years. He advised that there were no limitations or exclusions that he was aware of, but if he learned differently, he would get back with me. He never contacted me with any change of information, and never explained any waiting periods – so I chose to enroll in this policy.
When the time came however, Joshua, was not returning calls or responding to emails, and I had to contact Corporate to get put in touch with his manager, so I could get enrolled on time, and information to Payroll and HR for deductions. The Manager – Brandon Fleming, did the applications over the phone and sent me a link to electronically sign. IF Brandon had ever mentioned the words “Heart Failure” in the course of completing the applications – I would have explained the AFib & Congestive Heart Failure – exactly as I had with Joshua, and the rest of this email, nor any of the other wasted calls and emails would be necessary, because the policy would never have been selected. However, that was not the case, and I selected and have been paying for this policy since 1/1/19.
Lo and behold, mid January – I went to the ER, and was admitted for what turned out to be fluid overload and congestive heart failure. I was tested for everything from blood clots to heart attack, thankfully which came back negative – but the diagnosis had to do with Heart Failure. When The Doctor mentioned I needed to stay a few days, I began a claim online. I was interrupted by another doctor, and when I came back to complete it, your system set up a 2nd claim. When I went to submit, it of course asked for a UB04, which the hospital insists is illegal to provide directly to a patient, but couldn’t be provided anyway, until I was released – So the Hospital faxed it to you, which you verified in email on 1/21, that it had been received.
At first, this was the reason I was given for the delay in paying, I was advised faxes aren’t handled in the same order or method as online submittals, and basically you penalize your clients, if a hospital insists on faxing the information to you. A few days later, when I still had not been paid, I began calling and emailing, trying to get to the bottom of the problem. I have spoken with several claims “supervisors”, Brandon Fleming and his manager Brian Everett – all to no avail. I am no further ahead today – 2 months later, than I was when I first began the process, despite being told on 2/5/19 that the claim was being finalized that day, and the money would be in my account within a couple days – it still hasn’t arrived.
The first claim “supervisor” I spoke with finally informed me that the claim was on hold, because they were investigating for “an incorrect application”. From that instant onward, I have very clearly explain over, and over again – the entire situation. That I clearly asked before selecting the policy, if there were any limitations or exclusions and was advised – No, there weren’t. That had Brandon ever said “Heart Failure” in the course of asking the questions on the application – I would have answered the question with a Yes – and explained that I’ve had Heart Failure since 1994. He never asked that part of the question. I have talked and emailed ad nauseam all of the details with every individual, I have wasted HOURS and HOURS of time.
I have been overdrawn for the bulk of the past 6 weeks and have been charged over $200 in overdraft fees, because of the delays in paying this claim despite the fact that on 2/5 I was promised it would be paid that evening, and the money in my account within a couple days. I have been threatened with utilities being shut off in sub-zero temperatures, and had no other alternative but to pay them and remain overdrawn. I have BEGGED for assistance in getting this claim resolved – nothing.
Brian Everett assured me that he could escalate this to a Laison and we could hopefully get somewhere. This weekend, I received two messages in my Aflac Portal, telling me you were requesting another 6 months information from the Hospital and another which had an authorization from over TWO YEARS ago, from my former benefits under my past employer – for a Chiropractor I had been seeing just before I broke my wrist and filed an accident claim under those past benefits. This is in absolutely NO WAY connected!! Chiropractic care on my low back a couple years ago, has NOTHING to do with Afib and Congestive Heart Failure, and a Hospitalization in January of THIS YEAR!!
It is clear to me that Aflac has no intention of doing what’s right an getting this claim paid! This is at the VERY LEAST a case of errors and omissions. The Agent – Joshua Jacks, either “erroneously” told me that there were no limitations or exclusionis on pre-existing conditions, and his manager Brandon, “omitted” asking me about Heart Failure in the application. OR … I have to believe someone cared more about a couple bucks of commission, than taking care of your clients. The way things are looking, I’m beginning to suspect fraud.
This is the second time I have had such nightmares with Aflac. The first was under my past employer, when the rep signed me up for Short-Term Disability, knowing I had coverage that was paid for by my employer. Two Years later, when I realized I’d had duplicate benefits – it was absolute HELL getting Aflac to recind the policy and return my premiums. This current experience described above is no less a nightmare – and is possibly worse, because I was promised $2500 based on the benefit I selected with the explainations provided by the rep – but I not only still don’t have the $2500 – I have spent that amount in billable time, trying to talk to you people, in addition to over $200 in overdraft fees and lost credibility with my bank.
I told Brian in an email over the weekend, if this isn’t resolved and paid by end of business Wednesday 3/13 I will be filing a complaint with the Insurance Commissioner and copy my attorney on everything. I will also be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Aflac’s practices are absolutely attrocious!!

Dear AFLAC,
Not happy.
Fell on a street corner, injured my right hand, especially my little finger.
Went to the doctor the next day. Had an x-ray or other procedure.
Filed a claim on a policy I have had since Sep 2014.
Claim is denied. A letter says this is not an accident and it is not an injury.
What??????This is infuriating.
Call AFLAC and an automated message says my original claim was denied because it was filed before my effective date. Claim was filed on 9-17-2018 and my effective date was 09-08-2014??????
What is wrong at AFLAC?
Now the claims appeal process could take 30-60 days????????
Again, furious as my claim should not have been denied in the first place.
If you need more information why not call or email and ask for it?????
How do I take this complaint further? Who do I contact?

To Whom It May Concern:
I’m sending this message about a claim I have put in for my husband Robert Goodloe JR . I have sent in all the necessary paperwork. His doctor have sent in all the necessary paperwork and they are still giving me the run around . Theft are asking for a authorization form which I have sent that in as well . Someone in that office is not taking the necessary time to read over the paperwork and see they have what they need to process this claim . I’m so disappointed in Aflac at this time . This claim has been going on for 2 weeks . They make me think they are trying to keep from paying this claim . Never in all the years I been with Aflac they have put me through all these changes . Every time I give them what they ask for they come back with something else. I’m so pissed off right now . I have so many people want Aflac and I will not refer them to Aflac and put them through what I’m going through at this time . If this is not settle by Monday I will consult with a lawyer on this matter . This make no sense . As I say I am beyond pissed off . I would appreciate if someone get back to me at your earliest convenience. My policy number is PoKOTO74 Forgenna Harris . It is in my name and he is my spouse . As I said I hope we can get this resolved this week coming up .
Sincerely

I have been dealing with AFLAC for 2 years and still have not got back all the money they over charged me. They still owe me a lousy 219.00 and the agent and customer service agents are nit wits, they don’t read and cannot do simple math. I am getting ready to retire and need a supplemental and you can be sure it wont be AFLAC nor would I recommend them to anyone. They need to hire educated literate help, someone that can actually get the problems solved. My agent was the biggest waste of time ever, pretty but stupid.
Thanks for listening, Glenna T Spicer

COMPLAINT – VERY NOTEWORTHY!!
This complaint involves the following individuals:
Ms. Lacey Guyton – HR Aflac
Ms. Brittany Chatman – HR Aflac
DT Administrator (metrodhr at gmail.com)
On July 28th, 2016, I was first contacted by Ms. Lacey Guyton, HR – AFLAC, who stated that she . . . her word used. . . “found” my resume on monster.com. She further stated that she had tried to contact me about a potential job opening for a Sales Consultant position with Aflac. I scheduled a date to meet with her for an interview at the site indicated in her email to me: Lacey_Guyton at us.aflac.com. She further stated: If I wanted to contact her, she could be reached at: 248.885.8110.
On July 29th, 2016, Ms. Guyton emailed me saying: “Thank you for reaching out to us. We look forward to meeting you on the 4th.”
On July 28th, “HR” also emailed me stating: “This is a quick reminder that you have a scheduled interview with our office on 8/4/2016 at 12:30 p.m.” Her email included directions to the Bingham Farms Office Center located at 30800 Telegraph Road, Suite 1950 in Bingham Farms, MI. She left the same telephone number: 248.885.8110. She also stated in her email: “If you have taken another position or are no longer looking for a career with advancement opportunities, please reply to this email now or call me at: 248.885.8110.”
On August 3rd, 2016: Ms. Brittany Chatman sent me a reminder that the interview would be with Ms. Heidi Glaub, Regional Sales Coordinator for Southeast, Michigan, for the Sales and Marketing position. She also gave me directions to the Bingham Farms Office Center, and stated: “If you need to reschedule for any reason, please reach out to me directly at 248.885.8110.” And to “Please plan on arriving a few minutes early to find parking, and dress in professional business attire” My reply email stated that I would be there at 12:15pm.
Sufficed to say, I arrived at 12:15, but the office was closed. No one answered the door, no one answered my calls to: 248.885.8110. I placed three calls to 248.885.8110. I waited outside the doorway of AFLAC until 1:10 p.m. with not so much as a cell phone call from any one of the above-mentioned individuals. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!
On August 5th, I emailed Ms. Guyton to find out what happened. That email was not answered until today, August 8, 2016 at 2:57 p.m., one hour ago, AND IT CAME FROM: “DT Administrator” stating that “I have been out of the office and tried to contact before I left. The manager who was scheduled to interview you was unable to come in because he was dealing with a family emergency.”
BE THAT AS IT MAY, MY INTERVIEWER WAS TO BE MS. HEIDI GLAUB.
I summarized this email in order to ask two very important questions:
Question No.1: In each email received from the above-mentioned individuals, they clearly stated that if something comes up, if you’ve found another job or career, or you need to reschedule, please call 248.885.8110.
SHAME ON ALL OF YOU AGAIN!!!
It was not until today, August 8, 2016, that I received an email from DT Lacey Guyton, AFLAC.
No matter how important the matter was that prevented my interview from taking place. . .and by the way, there were two other interviewees that were waiting to be interviewed. . . someone could/should have called me, as well as the other two interviewees, in order to explain the emergency. There was no contact from either of the above-mentioned individuals until today, August 8, 2016, and that contact came from Lacey Guyton, as previously indicated above.
SHAME ON ALL OF YOU AGAIN.
This is your job, what you were hired to do. In dealing with the the public, communication is key. One’s job could depend on it.

Aflac Medical Insurance
Corporate Office
Subject: Incompetency of Insurance Agent
Respected Sir/Madame
My name is Michelle Mooy, Policy Holder P0J4W9J1, P0J4W9J4 wherein the policy was purchased in South Dakota. During that process Mr. KRIS DE LUCCA was the agent, the policy was explained to us that all accidentals and basic Medicals will be covered.
On April 24 2016, I met with an accident and was rushed to ER and followed by Surgery. So, trying to file a claim 590309450 wherein the service provided by Kris was super unsatisfactory! He was always unavailable, whether we tried to reach him via email or telephone. I cannot believe his lack of interest in following up upon the claim as we several voice message and emails. So I contacted the regional office where Stephanie Gaston was very helpful and followed up on the claim.
Due to the miss information, our total cost of all medicals bills paid was about $17000 and our total claim received was $2000. Disappointed with the reimbursement we try to contact kris but yet again NO ANSWER. Prior to receiving the check I got hold of kris, he estimated a refund of $5000-6000 and not $2000.
I just wanted to let you know about my experience dealing with whole scenario, so someone else doesn’t have to suffer the incompetency of such Insurance agent (Kris De Lucca)
Regards,
Sincerely
Michelle Mooy

Wow! Talk about a three ring circus. My job discontinued ALFAC and so I chose to pay out of pocket as opposed to payroll deduction to keep my policy. I called several times and was told I would get something in the mail. I never did. I continued to call and finally did get something in the mail. An invoice. I paid the monthly premium and thought all was good. Another month went by without a bill, I called and was told the policy was cancelled for nonpayment and that I would have to jump thru all the hoops (paperwork, doctors physical, etc.) to get it reinstated. That upset me when it was at no fault of mine. I called and mailed corporate a letter. A woman called my home and left a message saying she would try me at my work number. That was two weeks ago and I have not heard back from her. I called using a phone that has long distance on it and left her yet another message explaining that I do not have long distance service at home and to call me at work. I am still waiting. AFLAC is not the company I thought they were. Their employees don’t know their butts from a hole in the ground. Least the ones I have had the pleasure of speaking with. I was told so many different things and given the run around, I just had to share the experience with anyone else who even thinks about using this company for supplemental ins. Wow!
Thank you for your incompetence from the top to the bottom of the chain AFLAC.

I’m really trying to give aflac the benefit of the doubt right now. I have an investigation going on at the moment with my boss taking money out of checks but only sent in about half of what I paid for. I have been trying to get my policy information for about a month and a half now but yet I either get told I have to wait 5 days for it to be authorized to be sent to me in an email which first its my information and the fact that I have to have it authorized for me to view it is unbelievable. Second I wait for about 3 weeks only to find out @example.com was spelt wrong then told I would receive that day but nope no email. Third I was finally sent payment statement and its not readable and doesn’t have my name on it so why is the world would I want this doXXXXent to use in court. Everyone I have talked to has been really nice but for goodness sakes. the fact that aflac doesn’t care about someone doing this to her employees is awful and I know you guys are not responsible but your pretty much condoning her actions.

hire a lawyer, it’s a ponsy scheme
they just don’t want to acknowledge you called. not pay you.
if you have a valid claim and you lose you home cause their negligence you have a right to make them accountable. plus some… contact your local states attorneys office. as well file a better business complaint…..

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO SPEAK WITH AN INTELLIGENT PERSON CONCERNING MY LIFE POLICY. THIS FIASCO STARTED IN MAY OF THIS YEAR. THE SERVICE I HAVE RECIEVED WAS HORRIBLE. NEVER SPOKE TO ANYONE WITH COMMON SENSE.!!!!! THE AGENTS I SPOKE WITH WERE ALL STUCK ON STUPID, I THINK THIS IS SOMETHING THEY LEARN IN TRAINING. TO THIS DAY MY PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED.

Wow!!! Trying to speak with someone that has some sort of education with this company is unheard of, we signed on with AFLAC in July , one week later I contacted our AFLAC representative to cancel due to a better policy thru our life insurance, I contacted her July 25th, she said she would take care of everything to cancel & make sure it was not deducted from my husbands pay August 10th. Guess what? It deducted and when I emailed her to complain she then informs me of some forms I need to fill out REALLY????? She couldn’t have done that more than 2 weeks before, you guys stole from us in my opinion, held information and that is bad business & since my husband was recommended this policy thru the State Patrol I will be sure to voice to every Trooper we know that you basically stole from us. Your company owes us money, I received a letter stating we were discontinued Sept. 1st, even though we should have been long before that. You guys suck! And should really hire educated people because nobody seems to know anything & every time I ask for a supervisor they transfer me but nobody ever answers, what a crappy way to do business!!!!!!

Thanks Jennifer! After reading your complaint & MANY others from other clients, I really do NOT think I am interested in returning to AFLAC. I USED to be with them for years with an accident policy, but the current so called policies really do not seem to be the AFLAC I used to know. I do NOT need to go thru all the BS the rest of you have had if I had another policy & needed to make a claim. From all of the complaints it seems like the ONLY nice thing about AFLAC is their duck commercials! I believe I will pass on returning to this company! THANK YOU to all of the customers who put out warnings to all of the rest of us!

Hello,
My name is Tracy Anderson and I have had an Aflac Policy for quite a while now. I really enjoyed having the policy because the customer service was so nice and helpful. And when I had a claim they were quick with the response. Unfortunately I have had some problems since the agent came and changed my policy last year. First he did not explain to me if I change from the individual policy to the “new” group policy if I had any previous claims that I could not claim anything else for that particular claim. For instance my husband was injured on the job last year and I had claimed that on my individual policy. This year he had some follow up appointments so I did the same thing and submitted my claim to the Aflac group. They did not cover it because it was a supposed “new” policy. I don’t think that that is fair considering he will probably end up with back surgery. The agent told me that if I wanted to file under the same claim I would have to pay 3 months premiums and cancel this new group policy and I would be out 3 months of money I have sent to the group policy. It is all Aflac I should be able to claim this on the group policy. I am not the only customer that is having this issue. I don’t think this is very good customer service if you ask me considering the size of the company! I don’t think it’s very fair to all of the people that had individual policies and are losing their benefits because they sugar coated the group policy. If I had known that I would of ran into all of these problems I would have never changed. I cannot even log onto the group web site and submit a claim. I am very upset that Aflac has turned out to be like this.
Thank you,
Tracy Anderson
