S.I. Newhouse’s first job was with Judge Hyman Lazarus, a New York City magistrate who operated a law firm in 1910.
Newhouse rose through the ranks in the company and in 1922 went into business with Lazarus when they bought a 51% share in the The Staten Island Advance. This newspaper proved to be the founding of an empire.
In the 1930’s Newhouse acquired six more newspapers. In the 1940’s he acquired several more and earned a reputation for his talent of picking up and turning around small undistinguished newspapers.
In the 1950’s he established a reputation as a major competitor in newspaper publishing with the purchase of several prominent newspapers with hefty price tags, such as the Portland Oregonian for $5.6 million. In 1959 he purchased Conde Nast Publications, publisher of Vogue, Glamour, Young Brides, and House & Garden.
Today Advance Publications continues to be a family business. The company has a portfolio of about 25 newspapers, 40 weekly titles, and magazines including The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, GQ, Architectural Digest, and Wired, among others.
Advance Publications is #49 on the Forbes list of America’s Largest Private Companies, has 27,500 employees, and had $6.55 billion in revenue in 2011.

Who do I speak with regarding al.com and it’s bias practices? The online news format is horrible and hard to read. It is impossible for some not all to comments on articles. Their biasness is more than conservative and teeters on discrimination. Please advise? Thanks

Dr. Kermit Gosnell is the most prolific serial killer in American History, but almost no one knows who he is. The GOSNELL Movie, about the serial killer Dr. Gosnell in West Philadelphia, IS NOT BEING SHOWN IN PHILADELPHIA! It is a continuation of the media’s fearful cover-up in 2013. Gosnell’s office was here in Philadelphia and yet no theaters in Philadelphia are airing it when it opens on October 12! Why can’t we have an honest direct media report about this?
Kathy Moser, Jeffersonville, PA
(The following taken from indiegogo.com/projects/gosnell-movie/#/)
The 2013 Grand Jury investigating Kermit Gosnell’s horrific crimes said this:
This case is about a doctor who killed babies … What we mean is that he regularly and illegally delivered live, viable, babies in the third trimester of pregnancy – and then murdered these newborns by severing their spinal cords with scissors …. Over the years, many people came to know that something was going on here. But no one put a stop to it. (Report of the Grand Jury)
Gosnell is serving several life sentences but the media basically ignored his crimes and his trial. They ignored the facts that emerged from the trial, like the fact that the babies he murdered suffered terribly. Here is what a neonatologist told the Grand Jury:
The neonatologist testified… If a baby moves, it is alive. Equally troubling, it feels a “tremendous amount of pain” when its spinal cord is severed. So, the fact that Baby Boy A. continued to move after his spinal cord was cut with scissors means that he did not die instantly. Maybe the cord was not completely severed. In any case, his few moments of life were spent in excruciating pain. (Report of the Grand Jury)
The media don’t think this is a story.
